House GOP leader vows action against King over race remarks

It was wrong. And he needs to stop.

Cruz appeared on NBC's "Meet the Press".

The New York Times recently quoted King saying, "White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization - how did that language become offensive?"

King insisted on the House floor Friday that he's an advocate for Western civilization, not white supremacy or white nationalism, and that he isn't racist.

King was a co-chair of Cruz's 2016 presidential campaign. "And I think we need that clarity and I'm certainly going to urge everyone to provide that clarity".

"What Steve King said was stupid".

Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy spoke out forcefully against Steve King's latest controversial comments in an interview on Sunday, promising that "action will be taken" against the Republican congressman from Iowa.

Watch:"That language has no place in America".

"Action will be taken", McCarthy stated, adding, "I'm having a serious conversation with congressman Steve King".

Asked if he was concerned about losing committee positions, he told reporters: "I've had no discussion about that". For example, Scott mentioned that over the past two years, "Republicans have focused on spreading opportunity, and it has paid dividends: From the creation of opportunity zones in some of our nation's most distressed communities to fantastic job-creation statistics and low unemployment rates, there's no doubt that the future is brightening for many Americans". "They believe there is some segment of the Republican Party that will abandon them if they actually do something about Steve King", Jennifer Rubin said while speaking with MSNBC's Joy Reid.

On Saturday, the Congressional Black Caucus, condemning "racist statements" by King, is calling on Republicans to remove him from committee assignments.

King serves on the Agriculture, Small Business and Judiciary committees, and chairs Judiciary's subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice. "Anything less than these substantive actions is another tacit acceptance of racism from the Republican Party".

Despite his long history of making Islamophobic comments, endorsing white supremacists and retweeting neo-Nazis, King previously faced little pushback from his fellow Republican lawmakers. And while his bigoted rhetoric was called out by several media outlets, including HuffPost, in the run-up to the midterm election in November, King was re-elected to the House for a ninth term.
