European Commission Triggers No-Deal Brexit Contingency Plans

UK's May to Warn Against 'Damage' of Second Brexit Vote

The Prime Minister's announcement came after Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn had threatened to table a motion of no confidence in her if she did not set a date for the vote.

MPs will have their "meaningful vote" on Theresa May's Brexit deal on 14 January, the prime minister confirmed on Monday, as she once again told the Commons that the only alternatives to her deal were no-deal or no Brexit.

May survived a no confidence vote among her Conservative lawmakers last week, but opposition parties are calling for Labour to propose a parliamentary motion of no confidence against the government this week.

Opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn on Monday tabled a non-binding no-confidence vote in Mrs May after she told MPs they will get another chance to vote on her deal in the week beginning Jan 14.

The opposition Labour Party's spokesperson Keir Starmer said, "No deal has never truly been a viable option, it is a political hoax, and deep down I think the government and this prime minister knows it".

International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt used the meeting to press her case for the government to embrace a no-deal outcome, and called for negotiations on a two-year "managed glidepath" out of the bloc, according to a person familiar with the discussions.

"The sensible thing is now to allow parliament to vote on each of the forms of Brexit canvassed, including the prime minister's deal", he said in a statement.

Labour says if the Government doesn't do this, it is accepting that Parliament has no confidence in the Prime Minister.

"We're in a really desperate situation at the moment whereby we're about to fall off a no-deal Brexit cliff edge".

The PM will say: "Let us not break faith with the British people by trying to stage another referendum".

NY mayor guarantees comprehensive healthcare to all
Those proposals, along with those for universal health care and guaranteed paid leave are still only that - proposals. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio says he has a plan to bring healthcare to all New York City residents.

"Another vote. would do irreparable damage to the integrity of our politics", said May, "because it would say to millions who trusted in democracy, that our democracy does not deliver".

Theresa May will urge leaders from the devolved administrations to "pull together" to back her Brexit deal in a Downing Street meeting on Wednesday.

"From the Scottish Fishermen's Federation and Diageo, to Airbus and Manufacturing Northern Ireland, business and industry right across the United Kingdom want to us to deliver this deal as it gives them the clarity and stability they need to protect jobs and living standards", May was due to say.

There have also been reports that government officials are considering giving the public a vote.

Another proposal being put forward if May's deal does not pass parliament is for MPs to hold indicative votes on different options to work out what steps to take next. "But if we let the ideal be the enemy of the good then we risk leaving the European Union with no deal", she told lawmakers, her speech punctuated by loud shouts of protest.

But Downing Street was reported yesterday to be blocking the motion from being debated.

If Mrs May refuses to allow the vote to go ahead, it would show that the government were anxious about losing it - clearly indicating that the Theresa May doesn't even have confidence in herself.

As the motion is aimed at the Prime Minister, this move is not the same as a proper motion of no confidence in the government and, unlike a proper motion of no confidence, the government does not have to allow time for it to be debated.

If Parliament fails to approve the text of her deal, Britain could crash out of the European Union with no deal - a prospect that experts warn could lead to serious trade disruption and trigger a financial crisis.
