People who eat diets that are high in fiber have lower risk of death and chronic diseases such as stroke or cancer compared with people with low fiber intake, a new analysis found.

Researchers also found people who increased the amount of fibre in their diet had lower body weight, and total cholesterol.

Professor Jim Mann of the University of Otago in New Zealand told The Guardian that research from the latest study "does contribute to the debate considerably".

Among those who ate the most fibre, the analysis found a 15-30% reduction in deaths from all causes, as well as those related to the heart, compared with those eating the least fibre.

Eating fibre-rich foods - such as prunes, rye bread and nuts - also reduced incidence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and colorectal cancer by 16-24 per cent.

The health benefits are best if we eat at least 25g of dietary fibre a day, according to analysis of observational studies and clinical trials conducted over almost 40 years. But it adds that for people with an iron deficiency, high levels of whole grains can further reduce iron levels.

Upping the intake of fiber can lower the risk of chronic diseases like cancer or stroke and, overall, prevent early mortality.

Most people worldwide consume less than 20 grammes of dietary fibre per day, researchers said.

To achieve optimum health benefits it's important to consume a balance of different fibres - soluble, insoluble and fermentable, and all play important roles in helping us maintain a healthy gut. They explained that foods with a low glycemic index or low glycemic load may also contain added sugars, saturated fats, and sodium which could account for the health benefits of this type of diet being less clear.

"The health benefits of fibre are supported by over 100 years of research into its chemistry, physical properties, physiology and effects on metabolism".

Speaking to The Guardian, Mann said that the findings considerably challenge many popular diets that reject carbohydrates due to their correlation with sugar. Rich sources of dietary fibre include whole grains, pulses, vegetables and fruit.

Fibre is the indigestible parts of plant foods, such as vegetables, fruit, grains and beans that keep the digestive system healthy.

Fiber content was shown to be a better indicator of a carbohydrate food's ability to prevent disease than glycemic index, the measure of the degree to which blood glucose goes up after a particular food is eaten.
