United States midterm polls start to open: Who will control Congress?

President Trump rally

But the angry tone has turned off swathes of Americans, giving Democrats confidence that they could capture at least the lower house of Congress, even if the Republicans are forecast to hold on to the Senate.

The elections will mark the first nationwide vote since Russian Federation targeted state election systems in the 2016 USA presidential race but federal, state and local officials have sought to reassure the public that their voting systems are secure.

Republicans are counting on Trump to rally his supporters in the closing hours to help maintain their narrow 51-to-49 seat edge in the Senate.

Of the 35 Senate seats that are facing polls, 26 were held by the Democrats.

Republicans are expected to retain their slight majority in the US Senate, now at two seats, which would let them retain the power to approve US Supreme Court and other judicial nominations on straight party-line votes.

Trump blasted Democrats over immigration during a recent rally in Chattanooga.

During an election-eve rally in Cleveland on Monday, President Trump claimed that mid-term elections, which used to be "boring", have now become the "hottest thing" because of him, attributing voter turnout and media attention to his presidency.

"Democrats want to invite caravan after caravan of illegal aliens to pour into our country".

In this photo taken on January 4, 2017 US Border Patrol agents take Central American immigrants into custody near McAllen, Texas. "No nation can allow its borders to be overrun".

"I think they will be both miserable and emboldened", says Rove. "I would like to have a much softer tone", he said. "That is an invasion of our country".

Early predictions show the Democrats have a good chance of taking control of the House. Last week, Democratic House leader Nancy Pelosi predicted it would happen.

He pointed out that Pelosi has raised more money in the history of the U.S. Congress than anybody else, and Democrats are confident in their chances of capturing the House.

Tuesday's vote followed Trump's tumultuous first two years in the White House, during which he cracked down on immigration, introduced massive tax cuts and employed increasingly polarising rhetoric. When you participate in the political process, you can be a check on bad behavior.

HBO, Game of Thrones Cast Slam Trump’s ‘Winter Is Coming’ Meme
HBO did not waste much before hitting back at Trump for his impolite misuse of a brilliant piece of literature. Williams, who plays Arya Stark, tweeted, "Not today ", while Turner, who portrays Sansa Stark, wrote, "Ew".

The campaign's final weeks were marred by the worst anti-Semitic attack in modern U.S. history, which left 11 dead in a Pittsburgh synagogue.

Female college graduates in well-off suburbs are in the spotlight because many are voicing disgust with Trump's aggressive rhetoric, and their votes could decide tight races in Democrats' favor.

Ultimately, the election is seen as a referendum on Mr Trump.

Trump took credit for the unusual energy surrounding the midterm elections.

And that would be more in line with the Dow has performed, on average, in the year following a midterm election. "I feel we're on the precipice of change".

Also seeking re-election are John Sarbanes, the Democratic representative from Maryland's 3rd Congressional District, and Dina Titus, a Nevada Democrat that has represented the state's 1st Congressional District since 2013. It will also signify a shift from past cycles when they were reluctant to defend the ACA from Republican assaults because of its perceived unpopularity. RealClearPolitics puts Trump's average approval at about 43 percent, with 53 percent disapproving.

Many voters said they saw the election as an opportunity to reject that kind of bombast.

"They can do whatever they want, and I can do whatever I want", the president said, according to a pool report. "That is particularly true when a president is unpopular, as this president is".

Speaking at an auditorium packed with loyal supporters in Missouri, an upbeat Trump suggested Republicans may defy expectations and retain complete control of Congress.

This looks increasingly unlikely, but Donald Trump's position has been cited as a core reason people are voting against the Republicans in the House. If Gillum wins and becomes Florida's first black governor, it would be another sign that the tide is turning against US Pthe president, who won the state of Florida in 2016.

"The House has been a rubber stamp for the Trump agenda". "Anything that gets done will have to be a bipartisan basis".

But if the Democrats wrest control of one or both chambers, they could stymie or even reverse Mr Trump's plans.
