Drift Smoke from Butte County Fire Enters Contra Costa County

Camp Fire Smoke Smoke from the Camp Fire

Tens of thousands of people were ordered to evacuate a fast-moving wildfire that exploded in size today, threatening several Northern California communities.

A California fire official says a fast-moving wildfire in Northern California has destroyed structures and injured civilians.

The Camp Fire rages through Paradise, Calif., on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2018.

The Camp Fire has scorched over 28 square miles in Butte County, which is about 90 miles north of Sacramento, according to Cal Fire.

The fire is centered in the Feather River Canyon off Highway 70 about five miles east of the town of Paradise which has a population of near 26,000 people.

It was not immediately known if there were injuries or fatalities. The company also said about 14,000 residents in Butte County and neighboring Plumas County were without power. Flames were engulfing homes, utility poles were crashing down and things were exploding, she said.

"We're trying to get as many people out as quickly as possible and save as many lives as we can", he said. - More than 18,000 acres have been scorched in a matter of hours burning with it a hospital, a gas station and dozens of homes.

"It's a very unsafe and very serious situation", Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea told The Associated Press. He was wrong. It was the flush of the Camp Fire around the town that made him panic: "I was waving down people just anyone on the road just help me because i didn't have a auto or nothing".

The blaze erupted as windy weather swept the state, creating extreme fire danger.

California is experiencing one of its worst fire years ever, with 251,610 hectares burned through Sunday in areas covered by Cal Fire, almost twice the amount during the same period of 2017 and almost triple the five-year average. The California fire map also includes info about air quality, evacuation orders, shelters, fire containment statistics, road closures, and more. "We had to ride through flames to get here", he said from the side of a road west of Paradise.

She and her husband "knocked on doors, yelled and screamed" to alert as numerous residents of 53 mobile homes and recreational vehicles as possible, Bernacett said.

"My husband tried his best to get everybody out". God help us!' Bernacett said before breaking down crying. She and her husband grabbed their dog, jumped in their pickup truck and drove through flames before getting to safety, she said.

Photos and videos on social media show just how intense the massive wildfire has become.

One Paradise resident who fled the encroaching blaze told the Bee: "It was so hot".

He confirmed reports that evacuees had to abandon their vehicles as they fled the scene.

"Every engine that we could put on the fire is on the fire right now, and more are coming", he said. Multiple motorists have abandoned their vehicles. "The message I want to get out is if you can evacuate, you need to evacuate", Honea said.

The wildfire was reported around daybreak.

Thick gray smoke and ash filled the sky above Paradise and could be seen from miles away.

According to the National Weather Service, the strong winds are expected to continue through Friday. "Everything is a very receptive fuel bed".

Fire officials were working on a plan to rescue patients from a hospital after officials tried to evacuate them but had to turn back because of gridlocked traffic.

Hospital spokeswoman Jill Kinney said all patients were evacuated.

The Camp Fire has burned more than 5,000 acres and is still very active as it is wind driven.
