Turkish experts invited to Saudi Consulate for probe

There has been fierce speculation over what happened to Khashoggi, a Washington Post contributor who wrote for Arab and Western media, after he vanished last Tuesday following a visit to the consulate to obtain official documents.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday called for a thorough and open probe by Washington's ally Saudi Arabia into the disappearance of Riyadh critic Jamal Khashoggi, after US President Donald Trump voiced concern for the journalist.

Trump has instead focused on USA and Saudi shared interests in ratcheting up pressure on Iran. There were no details about when the search would take place.

Pompeo's statement came after Trump earlier on Monday told reporters at the White House: "I am concerned".

Cengiz wrote in the op-ed that Khashoggi had gone to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul "despite being somewhat concerned that he could be in danger".

After leaving the consulate grounds, three cars turned left on to a main road while the remaining three turned right. "It would be a violation of worldwide law to harm, arrest or detain people at a diplomatic mission, he said, and noted that no such thing had ever happened in Turkey's history".

The Turkish Foreign Ministry reported on Tuesday that Saudi Arabia has granted a request to allow Turkish investigators into the Istanbul consulate.

In March, the State Department approved a $670 million arms sale to Saudi Arabia, part of a promised $110 billion in deals touted by Trump after his first presidential trip to the Saudi capital past year.

They checked into the Mövenpick, one of the people with knowledge of the investigation said. The Turkish newspaper Hurriyet also published the image. The consulate insists the writer left its premises, contradicting Turkish officials.

Turkish police operate at least one camera at the front of the building.

The Washington Post reports a Turkish investigation has revealed that a group of about 15 Saudi men traveled to Istanbul to kill Khashoggi as he visited the consulate.

But he added that diplomatic cars had been seen moving in and out.

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud told Bloomberg on Friday that Khashoggi was not in the consulate, and his country is investigating.

Khashoggi was previously a prominent newspaper editor in Saudi Arabia and an adviser to a former head of intelligence. Those policies are all seen as initiatives of the crown prince, who has also presided over a roundup of activists and businessmen.

"We call for cooperation between Turkey and Saudi Arabia to conduct a prompt and impartial investigation into the circumstances of Mr. Khashoggi's disappearance and to make the findings public", United Nations human rights spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani told reporters in Geneva.

The UN's human rights office has said it would be "truly shocking" if the grisly reports coming from Turkish officials are confirmed.

Saudi officials say he left shortly afterwards, but his fiancee, who was waiting outside, said he never came out.

Saudi Arabia calls the accusation "baseless", but has also offered nothing to prove he ever left the building.

Erdogan said "mere words [of Saudi officials] are not enough evidence". "Don't you have cameras and other things?" Why don't you prove it?

"We agree if there was any truth to the allegations of wrongdoing by the Saudi government it would be devastating to the US-Saudi relationship and there will be a heavy price to be paid - economically and otherwise". Turkey sent food to Qatar and deployed troops at its military base there.
