Taylor Swift makes politics personal with endorsement

I'm writing this post about the upcoming midterm elections on November 6th, in which I'll be voting in the state of Tennessee. "Vote.org saw (Tennessee) registrations spike specifically since Swift's post".

Before Swift's post, 190,178 new voters registered nationwide in September and 56,669 registered in August.

The old video went viral Tuesday after singer-songwriter Swift broke her political silence and berated Tennessee's GOP candidate for U.S. Senate, Rep. Marsha Blackburn, in a weekend Instagram post.

The worldwide superstar had always remained quiet on the subject, with many people believing that she was in favour of President Donald Trump.

"I'm sure Taylor Swift doesn't know anything about (Blackburn)", Trump said. "Let's just say I like Taylor's music about 25 percent less now, OK?" he told reporters on Monday. "It's rather evident and clear-I don't want to accuse her of this", he says before lobbing insulting accusations, "but I don't think she was the only one to write that post on Instagram". She will perform "I Did Something Bad" from her multi-platinum album, "reputation". (Swift appears to be referencing the sexual assault trial in which a local radio DJ was convicted of groping her at a meet-and-greet event).

Nadine Hubbs, professor of women's studies and music at the University of MI, and author of "Rednecks, Queers and Country Music, " notes that Swift's statement doesn't ever mention political parties, but instead focuses on issues like human rights, LGBTQ rights, equal pay and racial discrimination. She voted against the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which attempts to protect women from domestic violence, stalking, and date rape. If it took a pop star to make young people feel like their voice and their vote matter, and that educating themselves on issues and candidates is worthwhile, maybe it's the mainstream political system, and not dispirited potential voters that deserve the bulk of that derision. She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples.

Trump decries calls to impeach Kavanaugh as an ‘insult to American public’
Some analysts said the court's reputation could suffer as it becomes perceived as a political, rather than a legal, institution. Kavanaugh on Monday said he was proud his newly hired law clerks are all women, a first for a Supreme Court justice.

The president also said Haley has done a "fantastic job" and that she's been "very special" to him. At the White House , both Haley and the president praised her as a potent force behind the scenes.

Google Kills Google+ in Wake of Security Vulnerability
For Google , a data privacy reckoning may finally come as a result of a service that it admits nearly no one uses much anymore. Google says it hasn't found any evidence that developers were aware of the bug , so it's unlikely that anyone abused it.

Model Chrissy Teigen, actress Blake Lively and singer Perry were among those adding "likes" to Swift's Instagram post.

"It's a time when human beings, if they believe something, they should talk about it, especially as I think a lot of white people are waking up, " Cam said during an event at the Grand Ole Opry celebrating Ray Charles.

In a number of states, the deadline to register to vote is today, October 9th.

Last year, Swift won a lawsuit against a former radio DJ she accused of groping her. (In a typical day the site sees 14,000 visitors.) Of those that visited yesterday, 65,000 registered to vote.

Mr Trump dismissed Swift as an uninformed voter.

Our Harvard IOP polling shows that the 2016 presidential campaign, in conjunction with the Las Vegas and Parkland, Fla., shootings, the Supreme Court nomination fights and policy issues such as immigration, trade and tax reform, have made politics relevant to young people in a way we have not seen since the terrorist attacks of 9/11.
