How Google+ put thousands of users at risk

Google exposed personal data of almost 500,000 and didn't disclose it

A software glitch in the social site gave outside developers potential access to private Google+ profile data between 2015 and March 2018, when internal investigators discovered and fixed the issue, the report said, citing documents and people briefed on the incident.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Google became aware of the hole in its security back in March of this year and patched it, but then failed to inform the users who were affected. Explaining this bug, Google said, "With this API, users can grant access to their Profile data, and the public Profile information of their friends to Google+ apps". They were not able to confirm which users were impacted by this but from detailed analysis, they found out that upto 500,000 Google+ accounts were potentially affected.

App access to user Gmail data will be limited to fewer use cases, Smith said. The company has now chose to shut down the seven-year-old service that was initially launched as a direct take on Facebook. A spokeswoman for Google didn't immediately return a request for further comment. Our review showed that Google+ is better suited as an enterprise product where co-workers can engage in internal discussions on a secure corporate social network.

The tech giant announced the news on the company blog, disclosing the compromised user-privacy issue for the first time, despite knowing about it for seven months.

"And it raises the question: If Google hid this breach from the public, how do we know there aren't others?"

Google found that Google+ users only spent less than five seconds on the app. But those apps look downright buoyant compared with Google's own confessed numbers for Google+.

Google launched the service in 2011 as a challenge to Facebook but noted in its blog post on Monday that Google "has not achieved broad consumer or developer adoption".

Earlier, the company had been reluctant to share data on how often Google+ was used, but now, facing the fall out of exposed data, the firm appears keen to play down its importance.

"The consumer version of Google+ now has low usage and engagement: 90 percent of Google user sessions are less than five seconds", the company said.
