Facebook says millions of users had names search history and location data stolen in recent hack

Facebook's latest security breach, which enabled hackers to access the personal information of around 30 million users, should be a "wake-up call" for all stakeholders, cyber security expert Pawan Duggal said.

A hack on Facebook, which originally was reported to have effected 50 million users, now has been confirmed to have only affected 30 million.

In a statement, Facebook said that hackers accessed the name, contact details and other information of the accounts of 14 million people.

Facebook said that the FBI is investigating, but may not be asked the company that not to discuss who may be going behind the attack of the same, the Facebook also said that it has not ruled out the possibility of smaller-scale attacks that used the same sort of vulnerability. They could do so by exploiting three distinct bugs in Facebook's code.

Cyberattackers accessed that data plus additional information including gender, religion, hometown, birth date, and places they had recently "checked in" to as visiting, according to Facebook.

Rosen declined to say how the attackers went undetected for nearly two weeks as they accessed 30 million accounts.

Facebook has revised the total number of affected users down to around 30 million. Although there were 400,000 accounts, they managed to end up affecting 29 million accounts in the social network. Those users will need to log back in to Facebook.

Hackers accessed much more private information in a recent Facebook breach than the social media giant previously revealed.

For the remaining one million people whose access token were stolen, the attackers did not access any information, Rosen said.

This particular Facebook security breach did not affect Messenger, Messenger Kids, Instagram, Whats App, Oculus, Workplace, Pages, payments, third-party apps or advertising or developer accounts. The company said it hasn't ruled out the possibility of smaller-scale attacks that used the same vulnerability. For 14 million of them, hackers got even more data - basically anything viewable on your account that any of your friends could see, and more. The message content wasn't exposed except if the compromised account belonged to a page admin.

Typically, companies affected by large data breaches - such as Target, in 2013 - provide access to credit protection agencies and other methods to lower the risk of identity theft. For 14 million people, the attackers accessed the same two sets of information, as well as other details people had on their profiles. "Usually when you're looking at a sophisticated government operation, then a couple of thousand people hacked is a lot, but they usually know who they're going after".
