Canada concerned over reports Saudi journalist killed

Turkey believes journalist killed in Saudi consulate

Prominent Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who went missing Tuesday has been killed inside his Saudi Arabia's consulate in Turkey, unnamed sources told media outlets Saturday. After Turkish authorities and the media were allowed to inspect the Consulate building in its entirety, the accusations changed to the outrageous claim that he was murdered, in the Consulate, during business hours, and with dozens of staff and visitors in the building. It was not clear when the search would take place.

Khashoggi entered the consulate last Tuesday and has not been heard of or seen since, according to his fiancée and friends.

Khashoggi, a Washington Post contributor, had gone there on an administrative errand but "did not come back out" of the building, police had told the state-run Anadolu news agency.

The Post said "a person close to the investigation" shared the image with them, without elaborating.

Officials in Saudi Arabia did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"The initial assessment of the Turkish police is that Mr. Khashoggi has been killed at the consulate of Saudi Arabia in Istanbul".

"We have to get an outcome from this investigation as soon as possible", Mr Erdogan told a news conference in Budapest. "They have all of them".

"If he left, you have to prove it with footage". "Why don't you prove it, you have to prove it".

"Just met the Saudi ambassador to seek urgent answers over Jamal Khashoggi", foreign minister Jeremy Hunt said on Twitter.

'Tipping points' could exacerbate climate crisis, scientists fear
The report was prepared at the request of governments when the global pact to tackle climate change was agreed in Paris almost three years ago.

Turkish officials have alleged the 59-year-old journalist was killed in the compound, but Saudi Arabia has called the allegations "baseless" despite not offering evidence he left the consulate. He left the country past year for the United States fearing retribution from the kingdom which has recently witnessed widespread crackdown on dissent. Right now nobody knows anything about it, but there are some pretty bad stories going around. "I do not like it", Trump said.

Vice President Mike Pence said he was "deeply troubled" about reports of Khashoggi's fate.

Mr Al Otaibi said: "I would like to confirm that Jamal is not at the consulate nor in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the consulate and the embassy are working to search for him". Saudi Arabia is ranked 169th out of 180 in the press freedom group Reporters Without Borders' latest World Press Freedom Index.

The note said the kingdom invites Turkish experts to visit the consulate "in line with the cooperation principle" with Turkey "and due to the importance the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia lays on finding the truth about Saudi Arabian citizen, son of Hamza, Jamal Ahmad Khashoggi's incident of disappearance".

What have both countries said?

.

A member of the Saudi elite, he had remained in exile in the USA for much of the past year, from where he wrote columns for The Washington Post critiquing aspects of the Kingdom's reform programme. "It has been conveyed to him that we expect full coordination in the investigation process", the official said.

The source stressed that the Kingdom holds the responsibility of the safety and well-being of its citizens wherever they are.

.

In a meeting Sunday night with The Post's publisher, Fred Ryan, the ambassador said it was "impossible" that such a crime could be covered up by consulate employees "and we wouldn't know about it".

Saudis are, perhaps, trying to ideal their excellence in furtherance of their plans and the world must expect more covert operations by Saudi Arabia in a not-so-distant future with Iran as its primary target.
