Japan’s Naomi Osaka romps into Tokyo final

Karolina Pliskova

"I really wanted to get to the final".

Former world number one Karolina Pliskova utilized her big serve to full effect to ease to a 6-4 6-4 victory over home favorite and U.S. Open champion Naomi Osaka in the Pan Pacific Open final in Tokyo on Sunday.

Pliskova, meanwhile, was more than happy to take advantage of Osaka's sloppiness, converting both her break point opportunities and reeling off the last 11 points to secure a second WTA title of the campaign.

"I've literally never felt more exhausted in my entire life, so I kind of want to say the chances of me playing in the next tournament are very low", she said.

"I've literally never felt more exhausted in my entire life", Osaka said.

"It's a bit surprising but I felt kind of calm going into the first round match and a lot of people were surprised because they thought I would be very nervous", Osaka told reporters of her stunning run of form.

When asked to explain her lacklustre performance, Osaka replied: "If I know I would have fixed it". "The only thing that I could do is play as well as I can and hope for the best".

The Wuhan Open's co-director said Osaka is to be replaced by Polona Hercog of Slovenia, who lost in the qualifying to Puerto Rico's Monica Puig.

Osaka has been in the spotlight both on and off the court since arriving back in Japan after her historic win in NY.

"Because if you set a really high goal, than normally, for me at least, I tend to overwhelm myself".

The newly-crowned US Open champion, who was bidding to become the first Japanese victor of the event since 1995, succumbed 6-4 6-4 in a battle of two big servers.

"Naomi was playing so good the whole tournament, the future is bright".

In the third WTA meeting between the pair, Osaka looked to stamp her authority early, sending down a pair of aces on the way to winning the opening game in just 1 minute, 14 seconds.

But Pliskova slowly turned the screws and broke for 3-2 with a fizzing backhand which her opponent swished well wide. The world No. 8 was soon a set up after unleashing another brutal drive catching No. 7 Osaka flat-footed.
