Hurricane Florence: Weather Channel shows simulation of 9-foot waters

Florence crashed into the Carolinas on Friday with 90-mph (144 kph) winds, torrential rains and a powerful storm surge before slowing to a pace that meant it would plague the area with days of flooding.

The station's general manager, Matt Bowman, wrote in a statement that their reporting teams will continue providing their viewers with information as Hurricane Florence hits the Carolinas.

The Wilmington airport had a wind gust clocked at 105 miles per hour (169 kph), the highest since Hurricane Helene in 1958. Hurricane-force winds extended 80 miles from its center, and tropical-storm-force winds reached out 195 miles.

North Carolina corrections officials said more than 3,000 people were relocated from adult prisons and juvenile centres in the path of Florence, and more than 300 county prisoners were transferred to state facilities.

Forecasters said "catastrophic" freshwater flooding was expected along waterways far from the coast of North and SC.

The National Weather Service said about 5.25 million people live in areas under hurricane warnings or watches, and 4.9 million in places covered by tropical storm warnings or watches.

Inland cities and towns will not be spared from the storm, with anywhere from 5-20 inches of rain forecast to fall in many parts of North and SC.

Life-threatening storm surge is being reported along the coast of the Carolinas.

More than 634,000 homes and businesses were without power in North and SC early on Friday, utility officials said.

Images of fishing piers at Atlantic Beach, North Topsail Beach, and Emerald Isle showed waves pounding the wooden structures.

The now Category 1 storm's intensity diminished as it neared land, with winds dropping to 90 miles per hour (135 kph) by nightfall.

As of 2 a.m., Florence was centered about 35 miles (55 kilometers) east of Wilmington, North Carolina.
