Florence 'unloading epic amounts of rainfall' in North Carolina

As of Saturday morning, the National Hurricane Center announced that Florence is now a tropical storm with maximum wind speeds of 45 miles per hour and said heavy rains and catastrophic flooding will continue across portions of North and SC.

Mother Lesha Murphy-Johnson and her baby, Zac, were killed after being trapped inside their home in Wilmington when a tree fell onto the roof at around 9.30am on Friday.

The storm, which made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane on Friday morning and weakened to a tropical storm hours after, caused massive damage across the US states of North and SC by felling trees, splintering buildings, trapping hundreds of people, inundating communities and knocking out power.

North Carolina's governor Roy Cooper said: "Know that water is rising fast everywhere, even in places that don't typically flood".

The NWS says southern and central portions of North Carolina into far northeast SC are expected to report an additional 10 to 15 inches of rainfall - with storm totals between 30 and 40 inches along the coastal areas south of Cape Hatteras.

Officials from Cumberland County, Fayetteville and the town of Wade issued the order early Saturday afternoon, saying residents there face "imminent danger" from flood waters expected to arrive in the area soon.

Non-profit groups are preparing to serve tens of thousands of meals daily in the most-damaged areas, while state and federal emergency officials are locating temporary housing, including hotel rooms, for storm victims in the weeks or months that they're displaced.

The storm has already dumped up to 15 inches more on the Carolinas this morning.

Its winds were down to 45 miles per hour.

Officials in North Myrtle Beach, where some flooding was occurring, did report some delays in their 911 emergency system, according to a news release, but their public safety personnel are still out in the community.

'Monster' Hurricane Florence Barrels Toward the Carolinas
North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper predicted tens of thousands of homes and businesses would be flooded in his state. Labor Day marked the end of the peak tourism season in the Outer Banks of North Carolina and other coastal getaways.

Typhoon Mangkhut lashed the northern Philippines on Saturday, with its powerful winds and rain setting off landslides and destroying homes, leaving at least three people dead and six missing, as the storm barrelled toward southern China.

Power outages affecting more than 900,000 in Carolinas.

"Unfortunately, Duke Energy has spent years lobbying and litigating and still has not removed the coal ash from its unsafe riverfront pits in the coastal area, some of which are in the floodplain", said Frank Holleman, a senior attorney at the Southern Environmental Law Center who has battled the company in court.

"We have 4,200 damaged homes", he said, urging residents to not wade out into the streets because of the dangers posed by downed power lines. "As rivers keep rising and rain keeps falling, the flooding will spread".

Boats are stacked up on each other in a marina as a result from Florence in New Bern, North Carolina.

"That's why I got this thing, to use in times like this", he said.

Parts of southern North Carolina and northeastern SC could see another foot or more of rain over the weekend, according to National Weather Service.

In Jacksonville, North Carolina, next to Camp Lejeune, firefighters and police fought wind and rain as they went door to door to pull more than 60 people out as the Triangle Motor Inn began to crumble.

The remnants of Florence are expected to hit the peaks of western North Carolina in a couple of days.

"WE ARE COMING TO GET YOU", the city tweeted around 2am.
