Celtics’ Jabari Bird taking a break after violence charges

Boston Celtics guard Jabari Bird battled Atlanta’s Damion Lee for a loose ball during a game at the TD Garden in April

Boston Celtics guard Jabari Bird was arrested over the weekend and arraigned Thursday on a series of disturbing charges, and the team has finally made a decision to address the situation.

Bird was held on $50,000 bail at his arraignment Thursday on domestic violence-related charges.

"Unless you're a drug dealer, you don't have $100,000 lying around!"

His appearance in court was delayed because Bird was on guarded watch at the local hospital, according to reports. Prosecutors allege that Bird strangled his girlfriend a dozen times to the point where she fell unconscious.

"Most importantly, our thoughts are with the victim of this incident", the statement reads. I do not condone violence against women. "The Celtics organization deplores domestic violence of any kind, and we are deeply disturbed by the allegations against Jabari Bird", the team said. "I am hopeful that in due time and process, I will be able to regain everyone's trust".

When the woman finally escaped, she told police that Bird was having "seizure like" symptoms, and he later texted her that he would kill himself if she didn't come back.

Turkish leader Erdogan criticizes central bank's rate hike
He's always maintained interest rates should be cut and has derided high-interest rates as an "instrument for exploitation". But Neuteboom of ABN Amro said much more was needed for Turkey to turn around "the negative spiral" the economy is in.

Before being drafted by the Celtics, Bird played for the Cal Golden Bears and was a McDonald's All-American while playing for Salesian High School in Richmond.

The Celtics said in their statement that, per the NBA's policy on domestic violence, "matters of this kind" are handled by the league.

Bird was transferred Saturday to an undisclosed hospital for what police have called an "evaluation" that continued until Thursday when it appeared doctors treating him had concluded he was sufficently healthy to appear in court.

The Celtics have acknowledged they know of Bird's arrest, but have declined further comment since the weekend. Last season he signed a one-year, two-way contract and spent most of the season with the team's G-League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws. His next court date is set for October 25. He appeared in 13 regular-season games for the Celtics last season.

After a strong summer league showing in Las Vegas in July, he earned the team's final roster spot and signed a two-year, $3 million minimum contract, with the first year fully guaranteed at $1.55 million.
