It said that the account details of passengers making bookings through its website and app may have been stolen but insisted that passport and travel information was safe.

As for compensation, BA said: "We will be contacting customers and will manage any claims on an individual basis".

The airline admitted "criminal activity" had compromised the personal and financial details of customers who made bookings on its website or app from just before 11pm on August 21 until 9.45pm on Wednesday.

The company said it is notifying affected customers and has advised anyone who thinks they may have been targeted to contact their banks or credit card providers.

The Guardian reports that 380,000 "payment cards" were affected.

All BA systems are working normally, the airline added, so customers due to travel can check-in online as normal.

"I asked repeatedly for an explanation".

And in May 2017, serious problems with British Airways' IT systems led to thousands of passengers having their plans disrupted, after all flights from Heathrow and Gatwick were cancelled.
