UK PM May scolds Johnson for burqa remark after outcry

Boris Johnson Conservative burka

Johnson, who quit the government last month in a dispute over Brexit, made the remarks in a Daily Telegraph article published Monday.

It found that some 60 percent of respondents did not believe Johnson was "racist" to compare the appearance of women in burqas to "bank robbers" or "letterboxes", and, moreover, that 60 percent of people would support following Austria, France, Denmark, and several other European countries in actually banning the oppressive garments - something Johnson himself said was a step too far.

Among criticisms from Muslim groups, Johnson has also received words from fellow politicians including former Attorney General Dominic Grieve, Theresa May, Brandon Lewis and Ruth Davidson.

"I do think that we all have to be very careful about the language and terms we use".

There was no immediate sign that Johnson planned to back down.

Sayeeda Warsi, Johnson's colleague in the Conservative Party, and a member of the House of Lords, accused him of making "hate crime more likely" with an indefensible "dog-whistle" reference to fully veiled Muslim women. He resigned as foreign secretary in July, accusing May of killing "the Brexit dream" with her plan to seek close economic ties with the European Union after the United Kingdom leaves the bloc next year.

Sajjad Karim, the party's representative for North-West England, said Johnson's controversial comments had pushed the boundaries of acceptable political debate and as a result the party had to decide what future it wanted to embrace.
