North Korea accuses United States of 'spreading falsehoods' in damming statement

North Korea warned Thursday that there could be no progress in its denuclearization as it accused some senior US officials of trying to strengthen global sanctions on Pyongyang.

But the North Korea statement separates Mr. Trump from "high-level officials", thus allowing the the country to rail against the USA, while leaving the door open for the president to continue his dialogue with leader Kim Jong Un.

White House national security adviser John Bolton on Tuesday said North Korea has not taken the necessary steps to denuclearize despite an agreement between Pyongyang's leader Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump in June.

At Trump and Kim's historic summit, the two signed a document stating that Pyongyang would work toward "complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

National security adviser John Bolton earlier this week said North Korea had not begun the progress, while United States envoy to the UN, Nikki Haley, said Washington was "not willing to wait for too long" for the North.

It continued: "Now, the issue in question is that going against the intention of President Trump to advance the DPRK - US relations, some high level officials within the US administration are making baseless allegations against us and making desperate attempts at intensifying the global sanctions and pressure".

The North Korean statement followed comments this week by top American diplomats stressing the need for Pyongyang to take additional steps toward denuclearisation.

North Korea and South Korea have agreed to start a joint survey of cross-border roads next week as part of efforts to modernise and reconnect them across their borders, the unification ministry said Friday (Aug 10).

The United States is "not willing to wait for too long" for North Korea to take steps toward denuclearization, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said on Wednesday. The US remains cautious as it wants to see progress in denuclearization talks first.

The newspaper emphasized that North Korea has long made calls for declaring an end to the war and pushed to replace the armistice with a peace treaty, all of which it believes can be realized when the two sides cooperate.

"This is all in North Korea's court", Haley told reporters traveling with her during a visit to Colombia, where she attended the inauguration of new Colombian President Ivan Duque and met migrants who had fled Venezuela.

The report said: "North Korea has not stopped its nuclear and missile programs and continued to defy Security Council resolutions".
