Nobel Prize victor V S Naipaul passes away

The Port of Spain became the setting for his first novel, Miguel Street, written in 1959.

One of his seminal novels was the "A House for Mr Biswas" (1961), which looked at the nearly impossible task for Indian immigrants in the Caribbean of trying to integrate into society while keeping hold of their roots.

Awarding him the Nobel, the Swedish Academy said he was a "literary circumnavigator, only ever really at home in himself, in his inimitable voice".

The Nobel Prize in literature committee awarded Sir Vidia for "having united perceptive narrative and incorruptible scrutiny in works that compel us to see the presence of suppressed histories".

Born in Trinidad on August 17, 1932, Naipaul studied at Oxford University and published his first novel, "The Mystic Masseur", in 1957. He subsequently settled in England, although he travelled extensively thereafter.

He married Patricia Hale, whom he met at Oxford in 1955. After she died in 1996, he went on to marry Lady Nadira.

Meteor shower lights up skies over Europe
The space agency said the meteors are best seen in the pre-dawn hours around 2am local time when the Perseids are most intense. This time the shower will be especially visible thanks to the August 11 new moon, leaving a dark and hopefully clear sky.

Sir Vidia was outspoken and is known for criticisms of Tony Blair - who he described as a "pirate" - as well as Charles Dickens and EM Forster.

Mr Naipaul notoriously fell out with author Paul Theroux, whom he had mentored, with the spat causing a rift for years.

Paying tribute to his friend, who he said had been in poor health, Theroux said: "He also never wrote falsely". He was a scourge of anyone who used a clich頯r an un-thought out sentence. In 2008, he recalled his childhood as "pretty awful" and his family as "terrible. very large, with too many people".

Naipaul won the 1971 Booker Prize for his novel In a Free State.

In a Twitter post, Mr Rushdie conceded that the pair had "disagreed all our lives, about politics, about literature", but added that he feels "as sad as if I just lost a beloved older brother".
