Man's legs, hands amputated after contact with dog's saliva

Manteufel has undergone several surgeries to amputate his legs and arms

It's believed a blood infection that resulted in the amputation of a man's legs could have been contracted after he was licked by a dog. Doctors pumped him with antibiotics to stop the infection, his wife said, but clots blocked the flow of blood to his extremities, causing tissue and muscles to die.

Last month, Greg Manteufel, from West Bend, started experiencing flu-like symptoms including fever, vomiting and diarrhea. To Dawn, it was as if her husband had just been beaten with a baseball bat.

Doctors diagnosed Manteufel with a rare blood infection caused by bacteria called Capnocytophaga canimorsus that's commonly found in the saliva of most healthy dogs and is usually not harmful to humans, the Post reported. However, there have only been about 500 cases logged in the US and Canada since 1976 of the bacteria causing sepsis when no dog bite was found.

Manteufel experienced severe complications, which caused his blood pressure to drop and the circulation in his legs to decrease rapidly.

Dawn Manteufel said that they are focued on what her husband has left, rather than what was taken away.

Be sure that we are going to do some movement but like always, we're working hard - no rash decisions. "No rash decisions. Total of 9 players including France captain Hugo Lloris did not join the team for the pre-season tour.

Doctors say his case is not common and more like a "crazy fluke".

"This bacteria caused the sepsis in Greg's body that has completely changed not only Greg's life but his entire family's as well", states a GoFundMe page set up by Manteufel's loved ones. Dr. Silvia Munoz-Price, an infectious disease specialist with Froedtert Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin, told the station the infection got into his blood and "triggered a very severe response in his body". Doctors would eventually be forced to remove parts of Manteufel's lower legs and nose as well.

Within days of being admitted to the hospital, Manteufel had to have both of his feet amputated. Possibly. If you own a cat or dog be aware that Capnocytophaga Canimorsus is a normal bacteria that grows in the mouth of up to 60% of dogs and 17% of cats.

'He is so thankful to be alive today and is taking one day at a time'. More than 99-percent of the people who have dogs will never have this issue. Heavy drinkers, people who have had their spleens removed, and individuals with HIV or cancer are most at risk for contracting the infection.
