115 injured in clashes as Bangla teen protests turn violent

More than 100 students hurt during violent standoffs with police in Bangladesh, hospital says - but police deny anything happened

The protests spreading across Bangladesh have highlighted traffic risks in the densely populated country, where more than 4,000 people die in road accidents each year, one of the world's highest rates, the World Bank says.

Tens of thousands of angry school and colleges students have been demanding changes to Bangladesh's transport laws, paralysing the crowded capital of 18 million, after the two teenagers were killed when a privately operated bus ran over a group of students on July 29.

More than 100 people have been injured in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka as police fired rubber bullets at demonstrators protesting the transport sector, widely seen as corrupt and risky.

Dhaka remained largely cut off from the rest of Bangladesh as buses continued to stop plying from other parts of the country.

So far they stopped flag cars carrying senior cabinet ministers, Supreme Court judges alongside police and military vehicles to verify their drivers' valid papers and uploaded the pictures of the scenes on the social media when they were found to have lacked the licenses.

People and students protest over recent traffic accidents that killed a boy and a girl, in Dhaka, Bangladesh, August 2, 2018, in this picture obtained from social media.

Police denied they fired rubber bullets or tear gas at the protesters.

The move may be an attempt to limit the ability of students to mobilise or express growing online anger at how the government has handled the protests, hours after police and unidentified men wielding sticks and stones clashed with students.

Law enforcement agencies had proof that activists of the student wing of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) had been told to mix with protesters, Khan added, urging parents to steer children away from the protests.

Local media reported that political activists belonging to the governing party beat students marching towards their offices, but Obaidul Quader, general secretary of the Awami League, said the party activists acted in self-defence as the students attacked first.

One of the attackers, who swooped on protesting students in Jhigatola of the capital on Saturday, has been identified as a leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).

This student movement of Bangladesh could make it hard for the ruling party in the coming general elections because on Saturday the incident has given the opposition party an opportunity to question the government. On Saturday, US ambassador Bernicat's vehicle was set upon by a mob. At least 50 protesters have also been injured in street attacks.

At Jatrabari in Dhaka, transport owners and workers formed a barricade on Dhaka-Chittagong highway's Kajla to Signboard for two-hours while they were not allowing any bus to leave or enter the city. They also staged a demonstration at the Gabtoli Bus Terminal in Dhaka.

According to police, some 3,000 people are killed every year on Bangladesh's roads.

Recent months have also seen mass protests against a decades-old system of discriminatory civil service recruitment.
