Usain Bolt to be lightning striker for Aussie club Central Coast Mariners

Usain Bolt

Australian football agent Tony Rallis says an in-principle deal has been reached to bring the eight-time Olympic gold medallist to Central Coast for a six-week trial.

The Mariners, who announced the appointment of Mike Phelan as sporting director on Monday, said the initial proposals were for a six-week period.

The former Jamaican sprinter has made no secret of his desire to become a professional footballer once his athletics career reached its concluding chapter, and the 31-year-old has even enjoyed previous training sessions with Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United.

A season-long deal could follow if it goes well, he told commercial broadcaster Channel Seven.

Former Central Coast players include John Sutton, who had spells at Wycombe and Motherwell, former Swindon, Cardiff and Plymouth midfielder Wayne O'Sullivan and former Nottingham Forest and Northampton defender Chris Doig. "He will create dreams for young people and he will give the A-League a profile no amount of money can buy".

Bolt - who earned the nickname of "Lightning Bolt" in the media - played for Stromsgodset as a forward in a friendly match against the Norway national under-19 football team in June.

Mr Rallis said the owner of the Mariners would guarantee 70% of Bolt's salary - with the FFA expected to fund the remainder.

"We're not going to risk the Bolt image or brand or discredit the A-League".

Fifa 98's Usain Bolt is tackled by France 98's defender Bixente Lizarazu during an exhibition football match between France's 1998 World Cup's French football national team and FIFA 98 composed with former global players, to mark the 20th anniversary of France's 1998 World Cup victory, on June 12, 2018 at the U Arena in Nanterre, near Paris.

Mariners chief executive Shaun Mielekamp was excited about the prospect of Bolt playing in the A-League at Central Coast Stadium.

Mielekamp said Bolt was known to improve significantly every time he trained, and was an extremely fast learner.
