United Kingdom govt into crisis as Brexit Secretary David Davis resigns

David Davis and the crisis of democracy

After a day when the foreign secretary cancelled meetings for crisis talks at his official residence in central London, Johnson chose to walk from his job - just hours after May's Brexit minister David Davis did the same in protest at her plans.

It also puts a question mark over whether the leader will try to weather it and stand firm in her commitment to pursue a "business friendly" Brexit, or will be faced with more resignations and calls to quit herself.

In her reply, Mrs May said she did not agree but thanked him for his work.

Before his letter of resignation was made public, Davis's allies told the British press that he was resigning because he could not support the soft Brexit plan pushed forward by May at a crunch cabinet meeting Friday at the prime minister's countryside estate, called Chequers. Many eurosceptics are angry, saying the agreed strategy betrays her promise for a clean break with the European Union, raising the prospect that some could try to unseat her.

But much of the day-to-day negotiation falls to May's office.

The former Brexit Secretary added that the "current trend of policy and tactics" was making it look "less and less likely" that Brexit would deliver on the referendum result and the Tory commitments to leave the European Union customs and single markets. "That has been their practice throughout the previous year and I fear, in fact, if anything, this is just the start".

The junior Brexit minister, Steve Baker, also resigned, Downing Street confirmed Monday.

"It seems to me we are giving too much away, too easily, and that is a unsafe strategy at this time", he told BBC radio. "It has been worrying the prime minister's advisers from the start".

Brexit Secretary David Davis resigns
Ian Lavery, chairman of the main opposition Labour Party, said: "This is absolute chaos and Theresa May has no authority left". British Brexit Secretary David Davis has resigned from Government, effective immediately, United Kingdom media reports say.

In one of the most tumultuous periods in recent British political history, there have been four major elections in the past four years: the Scottish independence referendum of 2014, the 2015 United Kingdom election, the 2016 Brexit referendum and the snap election called by May last year.

She also said that Environment Secretary Michael Gove is the favourite to take on the vacant post.

- Davis campaigned to leave the European Union during the 2016 referendum and was one of three leading pro-Brexit ministers brought back into government by May.

Their complaints raise a question mark over whether May can win backing in parliament for her plans if any deal with the European Union is agreed later this year, and some suggest several of them could try to trigger a leadership contest against her. But some senior pro-Brexit ministers have backed May's plan.

She will face them at a meeting of the party later on Monday.

His departure came shortly before Theresa May was due to address Parliament about her new Brexit plan, which has angered many Tory MPs.

"All those of us who believe that we want to execute a proper Brexit, and one that is the best deal for Britain, have an opportunity now to get behind the prime minister in order to negotiate that deal", he told the BBC.
