UK Prime Minister Theresa May fights to stop Cabinet exodus over Brexit

Mr Watson said Labour was keeping the option of a second Brexit referendum open in the case that Parliament could not decide a way forward, though he stressed that this route was "highly, highly unlikely".

Prime Minister Theresa May urges her Conservative Party to back her proposals for close trade ties with the European Union, her spokesman said on Wednesday, a day before the government publishes its so-called white paper Brexit policy document.

Asked on BBC radio about Trump's comments ahead of his trip to Britain, he said: "There's always a turmoil in every country but no, I think the United Kingdom is proceeding as it always does".

The trans-Atlantic relationship has had some awkward moments since Trump's election. He has criticised May over her response to terrorism and approach to Brexit, and infuriated many in Britain when he retweeted a far-right group.

She told BBC Two's Newsnight: "I think if the Prime Minister makes further concessions with the European Union then there will no doubt be more resignations from Brexiteers in the Cabinet, from junior ministers to PPSs, because there is only so much that you can give in a negotiation".

"That's up to the people", he said, adding: "I get along with her very well".

Michael Gove left no doubt that he would not follow Boris Johnson and David Davis out of the Cabinet, declaring that he backed the Prime Minister's plans "100 per cent".

That was despite the likes of Mr Johnson and Mr Davis privately expressing their reservations about the prime minister's strategy.

Echoing a comment he made to reporters after the earlier resignation of Brexit Secretary David Davis, Tusk commented on Twitter: "Politicians come and go but the problems they have created for people remain".

Jeremy Hunt, appointed the new Foreign Secretary as the Prime Minister carried out a hurried reshuffle of her top team, vowed that he would be "four square" behind her in driving through her Brexit plan.

Conservative lawmaker Michael Fallon, an ally of May, dismissed Johnson's "Brexit dream" rallying cry.

Speaking at the Institute of worldwide and European Affairs in Dublin, Minister Coveney said there had not been a clear British negotiating position for many months.

However it was unclear whether they had the numbers to force a leadership challenge.

Other pro-Brexit Cabinet ministers said they supported May and would not resign.

Labour's deputy leader, Tom Watson, mocked the former foreign secretary, saying he had "a career ahead of him on Love Yourself Island".

"This policy will be bad for our country and bad for the party", said the Lewes MP.

"What we have now is what the majority of people are looking for which is a sensible soft Brexit whereby the trading relationship between Britain and the European Union is one that is as positive and seamless as we can make it".

"We deliver that Brexit and we do it in a way that protects jobs and livelihoods and meets our commitment to Northern Ireland", she added.

One disgruntled Tory MP even declined an invitation to watch England's World Cup semi-final clash with Croatia at 10 Downing Street because of his unhappiness with Mrs May's Brexit plans.

In his resignation letter, Johnson wrote: "Brexit should be about opportunity and hope".
