UK PM Theresa May seeks unity amid chaos over Brexit plans

Chaos as Brexit Secretary David Davis resigns

Cabinet ministers rallied round Theresa May at today's cabinet meeting as Brexiteers said they were plotting a "guerrilla" campaign to force her to abandon her Brexit compromise.

The value of the British pound dropped on global markets after Johnson's announcement, having risen after the announcement Friday that a Cabinet deal on Brexit had been agreed.

"I don't think it's central to Foreign Secretary, but there you are".

Mrs May said she was "sorry - and a little surprised" by Mr Johnson's move after his apparent support on Friday.

The resignations of Brexit Secretary David Davis and Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson prompted talk Monday of a coup to oust May as head of the ruling UK Conservative Party.

One take is that Davis leaving clears the way for a softer Brexit and that might be the right call but something has been brewing before this latest whipsaw. "That dream is dying, suffocated by needless self-doubt", he wrote.

Government Will Miss Deadline To Reunify Young Children With Parents
They will need more time to collect DNA samples or other evidence from parents who have been released from government custody. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said Thursday there were "under 3,000" children separated from their parents.

May's government was rocked Monday by the resignations of Johnson and Brexit Secretary David Davis.

Conservative leading body the 1922 Committee had a meeting to decide the Prime Minister's fate following the resignations.

Although it has caused a headache, May was quick to capitalize on the fact that two of her biggest problems extricated themselves from her inner circle; she ceremoniously replaced Davis and Johnson with more amiable substitutes. Brexit-supporting lawmakers were angered by the proposals, saying they would keep Britain tethered to the bloc and unable to change its rules to strike new trade deals around the world.

May lacks a parliamentary majority, so she can only pass legislation if her party is united or if she borrows support from across the aisle.

It comes as the Tory government tries to get a handle of infighting over how best to deal with Brexit.

"What the Prime Minister needs to do is to give up on the Chequers proposal. which does not actually deliver Brexit", he told LBC Radio. A handful of lawmakers who want a clean break from the European Union said privately they had submitted letters calling for a vote of confidence in May, though they hadn't met the threshold of 48 needed to trigger such a ballot. There was feverish speculation on Monday about May's prospects. Many see him as a future leader of the Conservatives and as a prominent Leaver he could stop the rush to topple the prime minister from the Brexit wing of the party.
