Turkey sacks 18000 ahead of expected end to emergency rule

Turkey sacks thousands of public servants for alleged links to terror groups

In Turkey's Ground Forces, 3,077 officers have been dismissed, while in Navy the number was 1,126 and in Air Force, 1,949 officers and non-commissioned officers have been sacked.

Mr Erdogan will be sworn in on Monday under a new executive presidency after his outright victory in the June 24 elections.

Human rights defenders including Amnesty International have criticized the purges as arbitrary.

The Turkish government has adopted a decree in line with the state of the emergency regime, declared following the 2016 coup attempt, the official Resmi Gazete reported.

The emergency has been renewed seven times and the latest period is officially due to end on July 19.

The decree has also dismissed a certain number of employees of the Turkish Justice Ministry (1,051), the Education Ministry (658), the Directorate of Religious Affairs (240), the Foreign Ministry (38) and state universities (199).

Turkey has dismissed thousands of civil servants under an emergency decree for alleged links to terror groups.

More than 18,500 state workers have been sacked by authorities in Turkey, in what could be the final purge under emergency rule following a failed coup two years ago.

Turkey has accused Gulen of ordering the attempted overthrow of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on July 15, 2016 - a charge he strongly denies.

The detentions show no sign of slowing down after hundreds of people including soldiers were taken into custody last week over Gulen links.

Twelve associations, three newspapers and a TV channel were shut down.

Tens of thousands of others have been fired or suspended in the huge purge.
