Trump picks his Supreme Court nominee, big reveal tonight

Donald Trump Set To Announce His Second US Supreme Court Pick

In the days leading up to Trump's announcement, some conservatives were concerned Mr Kavanaugh would not be far enough to the right on certain issues including abortion and health care.

Donald Trump said: "What matters is not a judges political views but whether they can set aside those views to do what the law and the constitution require". The judge indicated that on the high court he would faithfully interpret the Constitution as it is written, providing an unsurprising nod to originalism.

In picking the 53-year-old Kavanaugh, Trump aimed to entrench conservative control of the court for years to come with his second lifetime appointment to the nation's highest judicial body in his first 18 months as president. He was appointed to that post by President George W. Bush, after serving as Bush's White House staff secretary. Kavanaugh later worked with independent counsel Kenneth Starr during the investigation of President Bill Clinton. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1987, and received his Juris Doctor from Yale Law School in 1990.

The White House reportedly sent an email to industry stakeholders Monday night, highlighting Kavanaugh's pro-business and anti-regulation record in an attempt to get their help to push through his nomination.

Unlike presidents or members of Congress, however, Supreme Court justices in the United States do not have terms - they usually serve until they resign or die, giving presidents who select them a judicial legacy sometimes lasting decades beyond their terms in office.

The president called Kavanaugh on Sunday night to tell him that he had been chosen.

As a circuit court judge, the majority of his law clerks have been women, Kavanaugh said.

He dissented from a ruling that let an undocumented immigrant teenager get an abortion while in federal custody.

"He's a brilliant jurist with a clear and effective writing style, universally regarded as one of the finest and sharpest legal minds of our time". "Justice Kennedy devoted his career to securing liberty".

Kennedy's replacement also could be more willing to allow states to carry out executions and could support undoing earlier court holdings in the areas of racial discrimination in housing and the workplace.

Judge Brett Kavanaugh: In His Own Words
Judge Kavanaugh recently voiced disagreement with a court decision allowing an undocumented teenage immigrant to have an abortion. Kavanaugh also worked with special counsel Ken Starr during the Whitewater investigation of President Bill Clinton .

Chief Justice John Roberts may now become the swing vote.

Judge Kavanaugh now faces what could be a hard fight for confirmation by the US Senate, where Republicans hold only a slim majority. "And just like Justice Gorsuch, he excelled as a legal clerk for Justice Kennedy", Trump added, saying his nominee "deserves a swift confirmation and robust bipartisan support".

Kennedy's position in the court's centre guarantees a fierce confirmation fight.

Republicans hold a mere 50-49 Senate majority, with the prolonged absence of the ailing Arizona GOP Sen. Kelly Ayotte acted as sherpa for then-nominee Neil Gorsuch ahead of his 54-45 confirmation vote to the Supreme Court in April of a year ago.

Kavanaugh, in brief remarks at the White House, underscored his conservative credentials. A year ago the president appointed Neil Gorsuch after the Senate refused to consider Barack Obama's nomination, Merrick Garland, to replace the late Antonin Scalia.

"I especially want to express our gratitude to Mitch McConnell for all that he did to make this achievement possible", Trump said.

Kennedy has always been a swing vote to in favour of abortion rights.

Kennedy cast the pivotal vote to uphold Roe in the 1992 Planned Parenthood v. Casey decision.

Democrats have turned their attention to pressuring two Republicans, Sens. Let's take a closer look at Trump's new man on the Supreme Court.

It could also create a lasting majority.
