Throne Speech Opens Parliament to Take Action to Help the People

While critics of the sex-ed curriculum have applauded Premier Doug Ford for following through on his election campaign promise, many others have said the province's short-term solution - forcing schools to teach the previous curriculum which is now 20 years-old - ignores more recent developments like gay marriage and the Internet.

The Tories repeated their promise to order a line-by-line audit of all government spending as part of their efforts to find billions in efficiencies.

The Doug Ford government's first throne speech committed to ending Ontario's cap-and-trade program and its sex-ed curriculum, freeing police from "onerous restrictions" and generally supporting lower taxes and less government.

His government announced it was immediately revoking the updated sex-ed curriculum brought in by the Liberals and reverting to the previous version of the document, which was enacted in 1998.

The Ontario government will expand beer and wine sales to corner, grocery and big box stores, the throne speech confirms. The throne speech warned that any carbon taxation by the federal government would be considered "oppressive taxes" and met with great resistance. The government will address those issues at a later date, he said.

Ford has already made good on two key promises this week.

Thompson also says the ministry is looking into how to replace a $100-million fund earmarked for school repairs that was cut earlier this month.

China's trade surplus with USA swells in June
Analysts expect to see the impact of the tariffs in the coming months, warning of a less favorable trade balance for China. Growth in imports for June showed a moderate slowdown from May, official data showed on Friday.

"It makes me, as a parent, more vigilant", she said.

Horwath said the speech also signals that the Tory government will begin to move away from providing essential public services in favour of cutting taxes.

"We can not afford to dither or delay".

Interim Liberal leader John Fraser was critical of the Tory's plan to eliminate the cap-and-trade system.

"Some numbers - 4,000 parents, 2,400 educators, 700 students, 170 organizations including CAMH over ten years went into writing this curriculum, so anyone saying there wasn't enough consultation is telling you nonsense", she said.

In Thursday's throne speech, the Progressive Conservatives promised to replace what it called "failed ideological experiments in the classroom" when it comes to math and sex-ed.
