Stephen Colbert blasts Trump's Supreme Court nominee

US Judge Brett Kavanaugh speaks after being nominated by US President Donald Trump to the Supreme Court in the East Room of the White House

FILE - U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell greets Supreme Court nominee judge Brett Kavanaugh on Capitol Hill in Washington, July 10, 2018. Shortly after, Democrats said they would not support this nominee.

Knowing full well what the Democrats attack points would be, Kavanaugh talked about the importance of women in his life and the lessons he learned on the importance of equality from his mother, as she, his father, his wife and his two young daughters looked on.

He also has a bad record on environmental law, doesn't support labor rights, disapproves of agencies like the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and opposes affirmative action.

As a federal judge, he noted how he can hire three clerks a year, and that majority have been women.

Democrats have shared concerns with Kavanaugh's partisan past and conservative rulings-earlier this year he wrote a decision calling the Consumer Protections Bureau "unconstitutional", and last fall he dissented from fellow justices on a decision allowing an undocumented teen to seek abortion. Schumer, demands unity: a "no" vote on Kavanaugh.

Democrats have pointed to past Kavanaugh judicial writings as evidence that he believes a president is above the law.

Kavanaugh also would be the sixth Roman Catholic among the current bench, and the second, along with Gorsuch, to graduate from the same elite boys' Catholic high school in suburban Maryland.

Republicans have little margin of error for the final vote unless a few Democrats can be brought onboard.

Robert Mueller reportedly is among those who believes a president can not be indicted when in office. "When Congress decides that winning is more important than governing, this is the situation you find yourself in".

The one would-be justice who would have brought a more diverse background to the court was Harriet Miers, a Texan with a law degree from Southern Methodist University and a close association with President George W. Bush. He was more empathetic to how a prosecution could interfere with presidential duties.

Trump lashes out at North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies calling for increase in defence spending
Trump called Germany a rich country that could increase its defense spending immediately if it wanted to. The US is paying for Europe's protection, then loses billions on Trade.

One case likely to draw attention is Kavanaugh's 2015 dissenting opinion on the health care law's contraceptives mandate. "We have one justice and dozens of judges appointed due to their proven hostility to civil rights". Kavanaugh has taken an aggressive view in favor of executive authority.

Did not Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg once question Roe V. Wade?

Not a low-energy Bush staffer. "Whoever President Trump put up they were opposed to". Shah told The Post that Kavanaugh's friends reimbursed him for their share of the baseball tickets and that the judge has since stopped purchasing the season tickets.

Leonard Leo, Vice President of the Federalist Society, has been called the puppeteer behind Trump's court choices, but that narrative overlooks the influence of McGahn, also a Federalist Society member.

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is conservative, and not everyone will like his opinions, but he's not the political operative some paint him to be, according to a former colleague from his Whitewater investigation days.

Schumer is talking a good game on blocking Kavanaugh now.

Democrats are anxious that Kavanaugh will join with the court's other four conservative members to reverse legalized abortion in the United States. "But that said, overall he has the foundation where we can expect responsible decisions even on those issues down the road" - should they make it to the Supreme Court level.

If confirmed to the Supreme Court, he'll be paid $255,300 as an associate justice. "All that changes for me is that we now have a nominee", she said.

Kavanaugh in the past has made statements about respecting precedent that could help in winning over senators, particularly Murkowski and Collins.
