Ryanair hits out over strikes causing 1,100 flight cancellations in June

Ryanair’s pilots are balloting in row over workplace perks

Pilots are planning to down the tools for 24 hours from 1 am on Thursday, July 12. Other countries may join the action, he added.

Ryanair pilots have voted by a landslide to go on strike in a row over their terms and conditions.

After the breakdown of negotiations between the management of low-priced airline Ryanair and representatives of cabin crew staff in Spain, Portugal, Belgium and Italy, it now seems nearly inevitable that flights will be disrupted by strikes during the summer, jeopardizing the travel plans of millions of passengers across Europe.

Tuesday's Irish vote, in a dispute about issues including Ryanair's approach to transferring pilots between its European bases, marks the first time pilots in the airline's home market have voted to strike since it agreed to recognize the union previous year - a major departure for the company given O'Leary once said "hell would freeze over" before that happened.

Ryanair has union recognition agreements with its United Kingdom, and most recently, Italy-based pilot unions.

This included: "voluntary/involuntary base transfer/allocation, command upgrade, allocation of annual leave and promotion".

First video shows boys in hospital after cave rescue
The boys meant to explore the cave for just an hour, a casual jaunt to relax after soccer practice, but the waters rose. Mr Jewell said: 'Our role was to help transport the boys under water through the cave to bring them out.

The union said it remained available and willing to engage on the issues identified in the notice of strike action.

The charter stemmed from a summit organized by the International Transport Workers' Federation and the European Transport Workers' Federation representing about 80 percent of Ryanair's cabin crew workforce.

It also warns of potential industrial action if Ryanair does not address its concerns.

120 of those directly employed by Ryanair have voted for industrial action, but it's not yet clear how passengers will be affected. Ryanair said the cancellations compare with just 41 in June previous year.

Ryanair claims it has invited Forsa and IALPA to meet "on 18 separate occasions" to discuss why pilots find the agreement unfavourable, with "no reply".

The decision to strike comes hours after the airline revealed air traffic control strikes left more than 210,000 passengers with cancelled flights in June.
