North Korea slams 'regrettable' U.S. attitude at nuclear talks

North Korea has called high-level talks with a U.S. delegation led by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo "extremely regrettable", contradicting Washington's account of how the meeting in Pyongyang went.

North Korea, however, said the "attitude" of the USA was "regrettable" and not in the spirit of the June 12 summit in Singapore between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Pompeo, who did not meet with leader Kim Jong-un on this trip, could point to no concrete achievement from the talks aside from an agreement for the two sides to meet around July 12 in Panmunjom, the border village between the two Koreas, to discuss returning the remains of USA soldiers from the 1950-53 Korean War.

Before leaving Pyongyang, he said his conversations with senior North Korean official Kim Yong Chol had been "productive, ' conducted "in good faith" and that 'a great deal of progress" had been made in some areas.

"These are complicated issues, but we made progress on nearly all of the central issues, some places a great deal of progress, other places there's still more work to be done", he said.

A meeting will take place between a team from the Pentagon and North Korea at the South-North border next week, Pompeo explained.

"We talked about what North Koreans are continuing to do and how it's the case we can get our arms around achieving what Chairman Kim and President Trump both agreed to, which was complete denuclearization of North Korea", Pompeo said.

The lack of a meeting with Kim, and North Korea's description of the talks, raise concerns about the future of denuclearization.

North Korea lashes out at the USA after two days of high-level discussions with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Saturday's talks were held at a villa in an official compound close to the imposing mausoleum where North Korea's former helmsmen Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il - the current leader's grandfather and father - lie in state.

Mr Pompeo said he "slept just fine".

That change raised suspicion that the U.S. was softening its demands for the country, an argument that State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert had insisted on Friday wasn't true. He added that the Trump administration was committed to reaching a deal under which North Korea would denuclearize and realize economic benefits in return.

US Department of State spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Pompeo did not meet Kim, as he had done on his two previous visits to North Korea this year, but handed over a letter to him from Trump. Kim ended Pompeo's visit on a positive note, telling the top United States diplomat just before he boarded his plane, "We will produce an outcome, results".

She wouldn't characterize Friday's discussions beyond saying they addressed denuclearization and the repatriation of American remains, saying, "We expect them to live up to their commitments".

But following talks on Sunday between USA envoy Sung Kim and North Korean counterparts, this "CVID" language appears to have disappeared from the State Department lexicon.

"No-one walked away from that, they're still equally committed. So the work that we do the path toward complete denuclearization building a relationship between our two countries is vital for a brighter North Korea and the success that our two presidents demand of us". Pompeo's trip aimed to secure the details of Kim's promise of denuclearization.
