I didn't criticise Theresa May to The Sun

Analyse this Donald Trump steers Theresa May on course at Chequers

Asked about the status of the "special relationship", Trump said he would give it "the highest grade of special".

The U.S. President has already caused controversy during his visit after landing yesterday, slamming British Prime Minister Theresa May's strategy around Brexit and taking aim at the Mayor of London.

Trump also addressed a controversial interview he had with The Sun soon after he arrived in the U.K. He told the tabloid May's soft Brexit plan could "kill" any possible trade deal between the U.K. and the U.S. But during the press conference, he said that's not the case.

Trump praised May and her qualities, and said that he would be satisfied with whatever Brexit deal Britain struck with the EU.

At a red-carpet reception at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, the 18th century ancestral home of Britain's war-time Prime Minister Winston Churchill, last evening Prime Minister May made a call to strike an "unprecedented" post-Brexit trade deal between the United States and UK.

He then took a question from Fox News regarding his upcoming meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"This incredible woman right here is doing a fantastic job", he said. They are very special people, it's a very special country and as I said, I have a relationship because my mother was born in Scotland.

A trade deal with the USA is supposed to be the big prize of Brexit, with its potential to largely compensate the economic loss that would ensue by exiting the European single market.

"We have this stupidity going on, pure stupidity, but it makes it very hard to do something with Russia because, anything you do, it's like: "Russia, oh he loves Russia", Trump said at the press conference before news of the indictment.

May's formal proposals were published on Thursday, but hours later the Sun published an interview with Trump where he appeared to side with the prime minister's critics.

Trump added that he wished the paper put the "tremendous things" he said about May in its headline, but acknowledged, "That's one of those things".

Donald Trump claimed he was misquoted by the Sun in his biting criticism of Theresa May - a bombshell for a foreign leader to level while a guest in another country - and said he had the tape to prove it. "She didn't listen to me". The U.S. can not negotiate a trade deal with the United Kingdom until that date Theresa May cited, which is in 2019.

"The prime minister will be hoping for a calm remainder of the visit".

As Mr Trump and Ms May spoke, thousands of protesters marched through central London, one of more than 100 demonstrations against the President planned during his stay. "I think he has done a very bad job on terrorism".

President Donald Trump paid tribute to the legacy of Winston Churchill on Friday amid questions about whether he's putting new strains on the "special relationship" between the USA and the United Kingdom that was forged more than 70 years ago.

The president in the interview denied that he ever "said anything bad about" May in the interview after The Washington Post reported that he thinks the British leader is a "bossy schoolteacher".
