Fernando Torres says joining Japan’s Sagan Tosu

Fernando Torres

Former Spain striker Fernando Torres has announced he is joining Japanese side Sagan Tosu.

His contract expired at the end of the 2017-18 season and he will continue his career in Asia, following in the footsteps of Barcelona legend Iniesta.

Fernando Torres' new club appears to be Japanese side Sagan Tosu after his arrival was leaked.

Sagan Tosu has been in Japan's top flight J.League since 2012.

Torres, 34, left boyhood club Atletico Madrid at the end of the season following the expiration of his contract and made a decision to depart Europe despite several offers to stay within the continent.

Torres had been in negotiations with Sagan Tosu several weeks ago , though talks reportedly fell through.

Torres' former global teammate Andrés Iniesta also moved to Japan this summer, joining Vissel Kobe after bidding farewell to Barcelona after spending 20 years at the Catalan club.

The two teams already met in the first round of the current season and drew 1-1 and the return fixture will be held in Kobe on November 10, as part of the 32nd round of the league championship.

"I wanted a new challenge in a completely different place".

"I have had offers from France, Germany and even one from Spain but at no point did I ever think about going to another European team", Torres said on Tuesday (via BBC Sport).

The striker, known affectionately to his fans as "El Nino", recently finished his time with Atletico on a high as they won the Europa League and he is no stranger to success, having won the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea, as well as the 2010 World Cup and two European Championships in his 12 years representing Spain.
