`Drunk´ seagulls have been confusing the RSPCA in Somerset

In fact, if animal welfare activists are to be believed, it's one we share with seagulls in England's sunny southwest. In fact, the RSPCA says it's been inundated with calls reporting birds that are pissed out their skulls.

Clara Sully, animal collection officer, said: "These birds were clearly wearing their beer gog-gulls when they scavenged their meal for the day and they've really been suffering with hangovers after a gulls' night out".

So-called "drunk" seagulls who spell of alcohol and throw up in the street are causing problems and confusion with animal welfare staff.

It added that brewery waste can also be used as compost and feed so narrowing down how the gull's are being affected has been hard.

According to vet David Couper, some were found unconscious or staggering and all were reeking of alcohol.

'But this year there has been a spate of cases with birds from east Devon, Dorset and Somerset.

"They all seem to have ingested some sort of grain - possibly from a brewery - that appears to have made them inebriated".

He said the birds had been brought in in recent weeks after being found on beaches across Devon, and a few from Bridport and Lyme Regis in Dorset.

'But it's odd because enquiries revealed these by-products should only have trace amounts of alcohol left after it's extracted'.

Calls to rescue drunk gulls started in mid-June.
