Apple’s iPhone emoji update includes a kangaroo and red hair options

Apple introduces new emoji characters

Apple is celebrating World Emoji Day by revealing several new emoji that will be coming to Apple devices later this year.

The update includes more than 70 images of people, animals, food and other objects.

Back in March, Apple said it wanted to bring in emojis that better represent people with disabilities.

Healthy eaters will be delighted to learn that a mango and lettuce also made the cut - along with a cupcake for balance.

The new emojis arrive later this year in an iOS update, and include a handful of hairstyles.

"Thousands of emoji are now available on iOS, watchOS and macOS, including emotive smiley faces, gender-neutral characters, various clothing options, food types, animals, mythical creatures and more", Apple says on its site.

The coming of the colourful characters was announced back in February by the Unicode Consortium, the group that decides on new emojis.

In a statement, they said: "Let's see Twitter alive with more emojis than it has ever seen". Apple says they will be included when the update rolls out.

You can't use the emojis just yet, but if you're looking for a way to ring in World Emoji Day, Burge has some ideas. For the most meaningful of reasons, actually - the calendar emoji displays Jul 17, which is also the date that the iCal app was first shown off at MacWorld Expo in 2002, running on the groovy sunflower iMac G4.

But while all of the executives are more or less recognizable, there's one top Apple figure whose Memoji likeness is just a little. off.
