5000 passengers to be hit by cancelled flights as Ryanair strike looms

Just 94 of Ryanair's 350 Irish-based pilots voted in favour of Thursday's strike, leaving nearly three quarters of its flight officers in Ireland available for duty during this week's 24-hour action.

However, only those travelling between Ireland and the United Kingdom will be hit by the stoppage.

Disgruntled staff are demanding changes to arrangements for transferring flight crew between European and north African bases as well as seniority and holiday arrangements.

The pilots are represented by the Irish Airline Pilots Association (IALPA), a branch of Fórsa trade union.

"We apologise to our Irish customers for these regrettable disruptions which we have done our utmost to avoid".

It said all customers on cancelled flights received text and email notification yesterday.

According to the airline, only UK-bound flights are affected.

The two sides are due to meet tomorrow but Fórsa says it expects the strike to go ahead.

Trump disses 'fake news' CNN in joint press conference with May
She is honest as the day is long. "To issue a blanket condemnation of the network as "fake news" is ... unfair". CNN is fake news I don't take questions - I don't take questions from CNN".

The company said it will help customers travelling to the United Kingdom with alternative transport - both flights and ferries - where there is space available.

Customer service teams are working until 10pm to help with refunds, flight transfers or booking ferries.

Ryanair has confirmed that it is to cancel up to 30 flights to and from Ireland on Thursday. Unions make clear that further action should be expected if Ryanair does not take onboard some of their demands.

"Ryanair pilots have already secured a 20pc pay increase, earn up to €200,000 per year, work five days on followed by four days off, enjoy rapid promotions and unmatched job security", said Ryanair.

Spanish union Sitcpla representative, Monique Duthiers: "They (Ryanair) are using their transnational nature or the Irish law at (their) convenience".

The latest industrial actions is spearheaded by crews that want to be paid their salaries in their home country rather than the Republic of Ireland.

The airline blamed some Aer Lingus pilots whose airline would benefit from the disruption for organising the strike.

The airline has said it "cannot rule out further disruptions in July and August".
