Uber will be able to identify drunken passengers

Uber patents a system that tells if the rider is drunk

A patent submitted by Uber details a system that uses artificial intelligence to identify passengers exhibiting unusual behaviour and could even choose to deny them a ride if they are acting "uncharacteristically".

The premise of the software is to use a learned algorithm to determine a user's state of inebriation. It also calculates the time the rider has interacted with the Uber app.

Uber patents tech that would identify drunk passengers before they get in the auto by analyzing a number of factors.

That behavior would be weighed against how that particular customer usually uses the app.

It seems that the ride-haling company has changed the way that many of us think about transportation and has filed a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for machine learning application to detect the "state" of a passenger.

Uber wants to be able to tell you when you've had too many drinks.

Proposal to split California into three states earns spot on ballot
Fresno, Imperial, Inyo, Kern, Kings, Madera, Mono, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, and Tulare counties. With its 55 electors in the Electoral College, California has always been a stronghold for the Democratic Party.

But, of course, notifying a driver beforehand could set a few liabilities in motion: Like, as The Verge hypothesizes, motivating a driver to decline picking up Sloshy McSlosherson, which, to the wasted, could be code for, "You're too drunk, drive home instead".

While the system could be used to prevent drunk and disorderly passengers from riding, CNN pointed out that it could be a draw for some drivers. Ideally, this would give Uber drivers a heads-up so they can fully prepare to deal with a drunk passenger or pass on them entirely in favor of someone who is sober. However it seems that Uber could be trying to take the guesswork out of the equation.

"From February 2016 to February 2017, there were 48 alleged sex attacks by Uber drivers reported to the police in London", says The New Statesman.

It is unclear how riders will access Uber's VR system - whether or not they will have to don a used headset is unknown.

"Riders in a particularly unusual state may be matched with drivers who have special training or expertise, or may not be provided service at all", TechCrunch reports.
