Trump, Kim arrive in Singapore ahead of high-stakes summit

Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump will discuss a “permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism”

The principle of Kim Dae-jung's Sunshine policy was that persuasion was better than force, and that engagement through dialogue and economic and cultural exchanges would bring about a change in the North and foster peace between the two Koreas.

Kim's summit with Trump has captured intense global attention after a turn to diplomacy in recent months after serious fears of war past year amid North Korean nuclear and missile tests.

After inheriting a nuclear programme that was fitful and making little progress, Kim poured socialist North Korea's limited money into developing a nuclear-armed missile capable of hitting the United States.

Trump, flying aboard Air Force One, will reportedly arrive in Singapore on Sunday night local time.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in, a supporter of the Sunshine policy, has made a fresh effort at detente since he was voted to power in May previous year.

Images propagated by state media help build Kim Jong Un's legitimacy and glorify his status.

Donald Trump said his summit with Kim Jong Un represented "a one-time" chance to forge peace between the U.S. and North Korea as he prepared to fly Saturday to the venue in Singapore.

The 3,000-mile journey is the farthest taken by Kim since he took the helm as supreme leader of North Korea in 2011.

Trump and Kim are to have the first ever US-North Korea summit in Singapore on Tuesday, with the American leader hoping his counterpart will scrap his nuclear weapons program in return for security guarantees. But North Korea experts argue that human rights needs to be part of the discussion if the North hopes to begin normalizing relations with the US and the world.

Lim declined to comment for this story. Funds for military activities are obtained from remittances that come from the forced labor of North Koreans sent overseas, as well as forced labor domestically.

North Korea dismantles its nuclear testing ground in front of foreign journalists, but Mr Trump announces hours later that he is pulling out of the summit, citing the North's "tremendous anger and open hostility". "How dare they do so, they shouldn't", the official told Reuters later.

Arriving on a plane loaned by China, Kim was also greeted by Balakrishnan.

Kim, then 85, was in poor health but was insistent on going.

"I delivered the speech on behalf of him, which was virtually his posthumous work", said Chung Dong-young, Lee's predecessor as unification minister.

A day after arguing with western allies at the G-7 summit over trade, President Trump landed in Asia on Sunday prepared to declare victory in talks with nuclear-armed North Korea - regardless of what happens.

Officers combed the city on Sunday, from the old colonial section to the modern skyscrapers to the hotel on nearby Sentosa island where Trump and Kim will actually meet.

After a flurry of diplomatic efforts, including a White House meeting between by Kim's right-hand man Kim Yong-chol and Trump, the proposed summit was put back on.

Representative Peter T. King, Republican of NY, called the episode a "warning shot to Kim Jong-un" in keeping with Mr. Trump's approach to negotiations.

The Liuji Restaurant, which was shut after its owner was investigated in 2016 for dealings with North Korea, reopened in March after Kim's visit to China, his first trip out of the country since taking office. But there is scepticism whether he will suddenly give up an arsenal in which he and his family have invested for decades.

Al Jazeera's James Bays, reporting from Singapore, said Trump has been sending "mixed messages" to Kim ahead of their meeting.

"Both sides are coming to the summit out of their own fears and frustration, and we should try to encourage Kim Jong Un, rather than question his intention, so that he can shake off any doubt and take the right path with conviction", Lee said.
