Trump gaslights the American public about North Korea’s nuclear weapons

Unprecedented meeting seen as a path to world peace

By tweeting threats of nuclear annihilation after North Korea's missile tests, Trump created the very crisis that he believed only he could solve by meeting with Kim and lowering the temperature by giving away the store.

After almost five hours of unprecedented talks between Trump and Kim on Tuesday, the two leaders signed a document in which Kim "reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula" and the USA agreed to "provide security guarantees".

The likelihood of Kim Jong Un launching a first strike against the USA, thereby bringing on "fire and fury", was low.

"A year ago the pundits & talking heads, people that couldn't do the job before, were begging for conciliation and peace - 'please meet, don't go to war, '" Trump tweeted.

Did Trump or Kim say anything about the human rights record of North Korea? "No longer - sleep well tonight!" the President wrote. There are still few details about Trump's decision to suspend United States "war games" in South Korea, which could fuel discussion about a weakening of the alliance.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Wednesday that Trump expressed his intention to halt US-South Korea joint military exercises, offer security guarantees to the North and lift sanctions against it as relations improve.

Last year, about 50,000 South Korean and 17,500 US troops participated in Ulchi-Freedom Guardian, billed as the world's largest command-and-control exercise and aimed at defending against a North Korean attack.

While Trump's Wednesday morning tweets do not reflect the terms of his agreement with Kim, his words appear to be having an impact. US President Donald Trump arrived at the venue just 60 seconds before the summit was to begin.

Pompeo was in Seoul on Wednesday to brief South Korean officials on the summit.

Trump Wants to Pull U.S. Troops out of S.Korea
Trump said the U.S. will cut back on its military exercises with South Korea but will not withdraw any American forces. Mr Trump's comments suggests he had accepted President Kim's position that the drills were a hostile provocation.

These comments are the latest in a slew of public appearances in which the actor made comments lambasting the president. His task was to introduce musician Bruce Springsteen during the Tony Awards.

The U.S. has stationed combat troops in South Korea since the end of the Korean War in the 1950s and has used them in a variety of drills. It has arguably gotten more brutal under the 34-year-old third current dictator, to whom Mr. Trump was so courteous and even complimentary in their Singapore meetings.

North Korea is believed to possess more than 50 nuclear warheads, with its atomic program spread across more than 100 sites constructed over decades to evade global inspections.

He said many in the media were hoping that the talks would "blow up" and that Kim Jong would "humiliate and embarrass Trump".

"I really think that Otto is someone who did not die in vain".

"We save a fortune by not doing war games, as long as we are negotiating in good faith - which both sides are!" the president wrote.

In South Korea, the liberal Kyunghyang Shinmun newspaper said Trump and Kim have started a "march of peace" to end almost seven decades of hostility and pave the way for permanent peace and prosperity on the peninsula.

How will this change relations between the USA and South Korea, particularly the presence of United States troops?

Singapore PM Lee Hsien Loong said that the joint statement "is a crucial first move in the long journey towards lasting peace and stability on a denuclearised Korean Peninsula, which would benefit our region and the rest of the world". The next military exercise is scheduled for August.

Washington has described the drills as defensive in nature, but Pyongyang says they are a rehearsal for invasion and has long called for them to end.
