Trudeau-Trump trade meltdown threatens $80-billion in Canadian auto exports

Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau meets with U.S. President Donald Trump during the G7 Summit in the Charlevoix town of La Malbaie

President Donald Trump's chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow and his trade adviser Peter Navarro blasted Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Sunday for "betraying" the United States and engaging in "bad faith diplomacy" at this week's fractious G7 summit.

Explaining the USA president's actions, White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said that Trudeau "really kind of stabbed us in the back".

The prime minister also said Canada would "move forward with retaliatory measures on July 1, applying equivalent tariffs to the ones that Americans have unjustly applied to us". He said Trump "did the courtesy to Justin Trudeau to travel up to Quebec for that summit".

Mr Trump responded by tweeting en route to his next summit, in Singapore, that he had instructed USA officials "not to endorse the communique as we look at tariffs on automobiles".

Blanchard had biting criticism for Trump, calling him a "malignant narcissist, so if you criticize him, he lashes back". "We protect Europe (which is good) at great financial loss, and then get unfairly clobbered on Trade", he went on to say in another tweet.

Canadian officials, including Trudeau, have fanned out across the United States as part of a months-long charm offensive to appeal to pro-trade Republicans at every level. Trump said in a second tweet.

"According to a Canada release, they make nearly 100 Billion Dollars in Trade with U.S. (guess they were bragging and got caught!)". Canada and Mexico are also taking action. He said US representatives will examine the tariffs on automobiles coming into the country and bemoaned the Canadian tariffs that affect American companies and farmers.

Trudeau hasn't responded directly to Trump and White House advisers' insults, instead touting on Twitter Sunday morning the accomplishments of the summit and the goals of the G7 communique Trump ditched.

The response from Mr Macron suggests an end to what observers had noted was a budding "bromance" between the French president and Mr Trump.

It follows a chaotic G7 summit in Quebec at the weekend, when United States president Donald Trump withdrew his endorsement of a joint communique, accusing Mr Trudeau of being "dishonest and weak".

Soon after Trump's tweets, his national security adviser John Bolton tweeted a now-viral photo of the President sitting down and crossing his arms with the other leaders standing around him.

"And that's what bad faith Justin Trudeau did with that stunt press conference".

G7 allies seemed as perplexed as Canada at the sudden diplomatic row, and Germany and France accused Mr Trump of destroying trust and acting inconsistently.

At the moment that opponent is the unlikely figure of Canada's Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau. "But I don't see any fundamental problem in the Canadian-American trade relationship".

French President Emmanuel Macron said "international co-operation can not be dictated by fits of anger and throwaway remarks". "He should pull back on his statements, and wish President Trump well in the Korean negotiations".

Literally moments after Mr Trudeau's government proudly released the joint statement, noting that it had been agreed to by all seven countries, Mr Trump blew apart the veneer of cordiality that had prevailed throughout the two days of meetings in a resort town on the banks of the St Lawrence River.
