Rumours claim that USB-C support is coming to 2019 iPhones

Image Apple began working on the USB issue before learning it was popularly used by police

Since iPhone hacks and unlocks usually work through this port, Apple's decision to restrict its use will severely impact all such devices being sold by the likes of GrayShift and Cellebrite to the government authorities worldwide. Some of the methods most prized by intelligence agencies have been leaked on the internet.

Apparently, there was speculation that Apple would end up using the USB-C port on its 2018 iPhone lineup but the sources claim that since Apple is still in the redesign phase, it would not be able to use the technology on its upcoming iPhones.

Apple said that after it learned of techniques being used against iPhones, it reviewed the operating system code and made a number of improvements to the security.

In a separate tweet Wednesday, Trump addressed the issue, saying that the US would "save a fortune" by not holding the "war games".

With the changes, police or hackers will typically have an hour or less to get a phone to a cracking machine. In practical terms, that could cut access by as much as 90 percent, security researchers estimate. It will have little practical effect on most people using the devices but will make it far more hard for investigators to use extraction tools that attach through the port for the objective of collecting the contents of seized iPhones. The FBI ultimately found a contractor that broke into the phone without Apple's cooperation. The company went to court in 2016 over its refusal to break into the iPhone of a gunman who, along with his wife, killed 14 people and injured 22 others in San Bernardino, Calif., in December 2015.

Since Microsoft has been doing the unthinkable lately by adding Unix/Linux capabilities to Windows, the adoption of USB Type-C in Apple's MacBook series arrived like a rather small surprise. While it's more of a conspiracy theory that Apple was involved in the process, GrayKey turned into a major disaster for the company that sells its products on the basis of security. Last month, the Washington Post reported that the true number was less than a third as high.
