Record 68.5 million displaced worldwide in 2017

In other news, key figures from the UNHCR report show that an average of 44,000 people were displaced each day in 2017, equating to 1 person displaced for every 110 people on the planet.

Despite the rise in displacement driven by persecution and violence and the lack of conflict resolution, the High Commissioner struck a positive note, saying that UNHCR is helping to find solutions to the pressures caused by mass displacement.

"We are at a watershed, where success in managing forced displacement globally requires a new and far more comprehensive approach so that countries and communities aren't left dealing with this alone", said Filippo Grandi U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.

More than 68 million people worldwide are now displaced after fleeing war and persecution, with 16.2 million fleeing their homes in the past year, according to a United Nations report published Tuesday. Fourteen countries are already pioneering a new blueprint for responding to refugee situations and in a matter of months, a new Global Compact on Refugees will be ready for adoption by the United Nations General Assembly.

The UNHCR said over 45,000 separated children sought asylum on an individual basis in 2017, but it suspects that number is actually higher due to underreporting.

"The safety net we put in place after Second World War and which has provided millions of refugees with protection, is now being upheld by an increasingly small number of countries". More than 25 million of them, sometimes our neighbors, friends, relatives or acquaintances, are refugees. The number of such people is increasing sharply in Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan and Myanmar, countries that have been caught in armed conflicts.

Melania Trump Wears Tone-Deaf 'I Really Don't Care' Jacket During Border Trip
Photos of Trump did not show the full phrase on her coat, and reporters at Joint Base Andrews did not have a full view of it. During her visit to the Upbringing New Hope Children's Shelter, Melania said 'I'm looking forward to meeting the children'.

"When so few asylum seekers are arriving Europe and the USA, we have the responsibility to increase our support to less rich countries that are now hosting a large number of refugees, like Bangladesh, Lebanon and Uganda, and increase the number of people we receive for resettlement", said Egeland. "The increase in the asylum-seeker population was mainly a effect of the relatively low number of decisions made on cases during the year", UNHCR said.

A year ago around 60,000 people profited from resettlement, which Grandi described as a "gesture of burden sharing".

The UNHCR said the figures debunk a flawed perception among some that the refugee crisis has disproportionately affected developed countries in the "Global North".

The reasons why the world's population of displaced people keeps rising are- United States immigration agents seizing children from parents at the southern border, Italy's new populist coalition forcing refugees to turn elsewhere, an anti-migrant backlash threatening to fracture Germany's government, The Strait Times reported. Never before has the world registered a larger number of people displaced by war and persecution.

The report says that worldwide displacement rose to 68.5 million last year, up by 2.9 million from a year earlier and the 5th straight yearly rise. Whether it's to support the refugees themselves, whether it's to support to host countries with resources or whether it's to welcome refugees when they make it to the border. "No one becomes a refugee by choice; but the rest of us can have a choice about how we help", he added. We have talked and written a lot about humanitarian and development partnership - now is the time to walk the talk and demonstrate that the new way of working can focus on creating solutions for refugees and collective outcomes. While almost 97,000 refugees were resettled there in 2016, the number fell to just 33,400 a year ago. The Americas were home to only 3.2 per cent of refugees.
