North Korea summit in Singapore

Some 3,000 journalists have descended on Singapore for the historic summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump have arrived in Singapore for an unprecedented summit.

Trump travelled to Singapore from Canada, where he attended a meeting with other world leaders.

Before setting off, Mr Trump described the summit as a "one-time shot" at peace and said the two were in "unknown territory in the truest sense".

It is unclear, however, under what terms North Korea would agree to in an effort to reduce its nuclear arsenal.

It was not clear what Kim Jong Un, who arrived Sunday afternoon, was planning to do on Monday or whether he meant to leave his hotel, the St. Regis, about a half-mile from where Trump's delegation is staying.

Dare I say it, conventional politics would not have got us to the point where we are now.

"Sorry, we can not let our friends, or enemies, take advantage of us on trade anymore", Trump wrote in a tweet.

In response Pyongyang said it was considering firing missiles towards the Pacific US territory of Guam. There was no need to. He also has sought to lower expectations for the meeting, saying it may be the start of a longer process. Would conventional politics have even taken us this far? "It's never going to be there again". The only sane reaction is to hope that they do both get along.

Sanctions on North Korea would remain in place until that had happened, Pompeo said. It heralded the summit as part of a "changed era".

The autonomy conferences will consider, by an electronic vote, two different proposals to allow schools to cancel the aid. That idea has fallen off the table amid concerns about creating an inequitable system that could face legal challenges.

On his arrival at Changi International Airport on Sunday, Kim was greeted by Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan and other senior officials. Trump left the summit early, and as he flew to Singapore, he tweeted that he was yanking the USA out of the group's traditional closing statement.

In authoritarian North Korea, where Kim's family has passed on power through three generations, images propagated by state media such as the Korea Central News Agency, the Rodong Sinmun newspaper and Korean Central Television, help build a leader's legitimacy and glorifying his status.

The North, many experts believe, stands on the brink of being able to target the entire US mainland with its nuclear-armed missiles, and while there's deep skepticism that Kim will quickly give up those hard-won nukes, there's also some hope that diplomacy can replace the animosity between the USA and the North.

The two leaders have had an extraordinary up-and-down relationship over the past 18 months.

Experts believe the North is on the brink of being able to target the entire USA mainland with its nuclear-armed missiles, and while there's deep skepticism that Kim will quickly give up those hard-won nukes, there's also some hope that diplomacy can replace the animosity between the United States and the North.

The US president vowed to unleash "fire and fury" if Pyongyang kept threatening the US.

Doubling down on his insulting language, he referred to Kim as a "sick puppy" on the heels of an intercontinental ballistic missile test by Pyongyang in November.

WALL STREET: U.S. stocks ended higher Friday, led by consumer products and health care companies.

On Tuesday, the two leaders will begin their meeting with a one-on-one session at 9 am local time.
