Norfolk MP persuaded not rebel on Brexit by prime minister

The government insisted it would not allow MPs to tie its hands in Brexit negotiations, despite being forced to offer a last-ditch concession to Tory rebels to stave off a House of Commons defeat.

A Commons defeat on the issue would have been a significant blow to May's authority and risked triggering a leadership crisis for the prime minister.

Earlier, Mrs May was hit by the resignation of justice minister Phillip Lee, who quit the Government live on stage during a speech in London in order to be able to back Mr Grieve's amendment.

Hours before the debate began, a justice minister resigned in protest at what he called its "wish to limit" the role of parliament in shaping Brexit.

Traders will stay tuned into Brexit noise where the UK Prime Minister faces a series of challenging parliamentary votes on her plan to leave the customs union and single market after Brexit, but it will soon be time for the European Central Bank and FOMC.

Theresa May has seen off a threatened rebellion on Brexit with last-minute concessions which could give MPs a bigger say on the final withdrawal agreement and make a "no-deal" European Union exit all but impossible.

"The decision was taken by the people, we gave them that decision and we have to stand by it", said Conservative MP Bill Cash.

The government would have to give MPs a vote on the next steps, if parliament rejects the Brexit deal - or if no deal has been reached by the end of November. Philip Lee said a choice between "bad and worse" options was not giving MPs a meaningful vote.

The first scare came in the third minute following a late tackle from behind by midfielder Alessandro Schoepf. So, heading into the 2018 World Cup , here are the lowest-ranked sides set to feature in the competition.

Theresa May ultimately persuaded all but two of her MPs to back her in the decisive vote in Westminster on Tuesday - but she increasingly appears little more than a hostage to the warring factions in a bitterly divided Conservative party.

"She said that anything which undermines the government at home would make the negotiations with the European Union more hard".

As with last week's set-to with Davis over the Northern Irish backstop, both sides of the Brexit culture war in the Tory party were nearly immediately in dispute about what the climbdown meant - and who had won.

The Lords amendment would have given parliament the power to decide what happened next, with the possibility of going back to the negotiating table or even staying in the bloc.

The frontpages of Leave-backing British newspapers said accepting the amendments would betray the 52% who backed Brexit in the seismic 2016 referendum. May's preferred approach is temporarily keeping the U.K.in some form of temporary customs union with the E.U., but this is unacceptable to hardline Brexiteers in her party.

On Tuesday, parliament will also debate other amendments, including a challenge to the government's plan to put March 29, 2019, or "Brexit Day", into law and an attempt to toughen a commitment to ensure a frictionless border between Northern Ireland and the neighbouring Irish Republic, which will remain in the EU.
