May wins Brexit vote, avoids rebellion

Brexit minister David Davis told parliament if it rejected the government's compromise on the "meaningful vote" and backed the House of Lords amendment: "What it actually amounts to is an unconstitutional shift which risks undermining our negotiation with the European Union".

But these putative pledges by the PM are inconsistent with Tuesday night's statement by Davis's officials that any new amendment relating to the power of MPs to accept or reject a Brexit deal must not restrict her negotiating freedom - or restrict her ability to sign whatever treaty with the European Union she would like.

The Prime Minister met pro-EU Tories in her private room in the Commons moments before the crucial vote to hear their demands for a truly meaningful vote on the final deal.

They subsequently warned they will not be easily bought off, while Tory Brexiteers urged ministers not to concede any ground. Anti-Brexit MPs had argued that removing the no-deal outcome was necessary for the vote to be a meaningful one.

Mr Bridgen added it will make an unacceptable offer from the European Union "almost inevitable".

Dr. Sarah Wollaston, chair of the heath select committee, switched to back the Government after saying she was "minded" to rebel over voting against the Lord's amendment.

Leading Conservative rebels welcomed the "important concessions" by the government, but insisted that ministers must follow through on their concession or face a defeat when the bill returns to the House of Commons later this month. "It was the prime minister who I sat in front of this afternoon and who gave us those assurances".

Government sources signalled to the Press Association that ministers were set to back the move.

A Downing Street source said: "We will get a good Brexit deal that works for everybody in the UK".

Those developments are likely to lower expectations of a Bank of England interest rate rise in August, given the central bank has said it wants to see more wage pressures before it increases borrowing costs.

Dustin Johnson wins St. Jude Classic with an incredible walk-off eagle
Jude in the same year was a tie for third by Fred Couples in 1993, when the event was conducted two weeks before the Open. He holed out for eagle from 170 yards on the final hole to seal an emphatic six-stroke victory at the St.

"The government have conceded that this is necessary and I expect to see a new amendment to cover this situation soon".

Pro-Europe MPs said May had assured them the government would accept two parts of the former attorney general's amendment - a vote on the final deal and a statement from ministers to seek approval from parliament for the next steps if no deal be reached by November.

"This justifies my decision to resign and makes it a lot less painful".

Fellow Tory Remainers Anna Soubry and Ken Clarke were not convinced by ministers' concession and voted against the government by backing the Lords amendment on a "meaningful vote".

MPs were told that one parliamentarian had to be accompanied to a public meeting by a six armed police officers because of threats over their stance on Brexit.

Well what the Remainer MPs thought they heard from May does not seem compatible with Davis's red lines.

The Government made a series of late concessions to backbench MPs who were minded to rebel behind closed doors, meaning the true nature of what has been agreed is not yet clear.

But if the amendments being debated in Parliament this week force a change to the government's negotiating strategy, the wound could yet reopen.

Following the vote, shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer said: "Facing the prospect of a humiliating defeat Theresa May has been forced to enter negotiations with her backbenchers and offer a so-called concession". We just want to make sure the economy is protected.
