Kim Jong Un goes for surprise nighttime walk ahead of summit

The menu for a working lunch served to U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un and their delegations during their summit at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island in Singapore

Despite more than a half-century of hostility between their two countries, President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had nothing but nice things to say Tuesday as they finally came face-to-face - though they said little about a deal on the latter's nuclear weapons.

With a handshake scheduled for 9 a.m., Trump and Kim and their translators will meet first in a session that could stretch up to two hours before they allow their respective advisers to join them, said the USA official, who was not authorized to speak publicly about internal deliberations and insisted on anonymity.

Experts believe the North is on the brink of being able to target the entire United States mainland with its nuclear-armed missiles, and while there's deep skepticism that Kim will quickly give up those hard-won nukes, there's also some hope that diplomacy can replace the animosity between the USA and the North. It's a reflection of the intense global curiosity over Kim's sudden turn to diplomacy in recent months after a slew of North Korean nuclear and missile tests past year raised serious fears of war.

The walkabout occurred less than 12 hours before Kim's potentially world-changing day of diplomacy, when he will become the first-ever North Korean leader to meet with a sitting US President.

One of the world's most reclusive leaders, Kim visited Singapore's waterfront on Monday, smiling and waving to onlookers, adding to a more affable image that has emerged since his April summit with South Korean leader Moon Jae-in. It's a reflection of the intense global curiosity over Kim's sudden turn to diplomacy in recent months after a slew of North Korean nuclear and missile tests past year raised serious fears of war.

Trump had said on Saturday he would know within a minute of meeting Kim whether he would reach a deal. And I believed in North Korea.

Rodman spoke from Singapore, where he had traveled to play his part in the summit between the two nations.

After a meeting that President Trump said went "better than anybody could have expected", Trump said he and Kim Jong Un will sign an unspecified document.

A United States official confirmed to CNN Trump's departure was moved up by more than 12 hours because Kim set his own departure for shortly after the summit, as first reported by Bloomberg.

There was no word on how Trump was spending the night before the summit.

The Swiss-educated leader, who is believed to be 34, has not left his isolated country since taking office in 2011, apart from visiting China and the South Korean side of the border Demilitarised Zone, which separates the two Koreas.

Tweeting from his hotel room in the pre-dawn hours on Tuesday, Trump sought to heighten the suspense.

Another challenge is monitoring North Korea's nuclear scientists.

"A complete and verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of the Korea Peninsula is the only outcome that the United States will accept", Pompeo said.

The fighting ended on 27 July, 1953, but the war technically continues today because instead of a difficult-to-negotiate peace treaty, military officers for the USA -led United Nations, North Korea and China signed an armistice that halted the fighting.
