Excitement high, expectations lower as Trump and Kim set to meet

-North Korea summit aimed at denuclearizing the Korean peninsula.

The team of White House aides and Trump administration officials had not mentioned whether the issue of North Korean human rights will be addressed during the summit between the two leaders, a sign the United States' priorities lie in mitigating weapons threats.

Mr Kim spent the evening before the meeting visiting some of Singapore's tourist sites.

USA and North Korean leaders are set to meet for nuclear talks in Singapore on Monday.

Still, the sense of anticipation was great in Singapore, with people lining spotless streets holding cellphones high as Trump headed to meet Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

But some question why Kim should trust any guarantees given Trump's history of pulling out of accords - most recently the painstakingly negotiated Iran nuclear deal.

As for Singapore, the White House said Trump was leaving early because negotiations had moved "more quickly than expected" but gave no details.

It's not clear what the USA side has been able to extract from the North Koreans in terms of their willingness to get rid of their nuclear weapons or allow inspectors into the country to catalogue the scale of their program. With the eyes of the world upon them, here is a breakdown of how the day will unfold. At the same time, he'd admitted he doesn't believe he requires extensive preparation to take stock of Kim.

Trump's goal is "ridding the U.S. and the world of threats posed by North Korea's weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programmes", Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters on June 7.

Highlights of the chat will be made available before "Hannity" airs, Fox News said.

The meeting, which will be held at the Capella Hotel, a secluded luxury resort on Singapore's Sentosa Island, will see the U.S. offering North Korea security assurances in return for complete denuclearisation, according to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

A peace treaty ending the Korean War, complete denuclearisation of North Korea or will it be just an elaborate get-to-know-you session?

"Dennis Rodman was either drunk or on drugs (delusional) when he said I wanted to go to North Korea with him".

The sides first spoke through intelligence channels, with U.S. analysts working to determine Kim's true willingness to abandon a nuclear program started by his grandfather and viewed by Pyongyang as a security blanket from outside aggressors. However, he was not listed as a member of the official U.S. delegation. By September, the two leaders were calling each other names, with Trump dubbing Kim "Little Rocket Man" and Kim responding by calling Trump a "dotard".

More than 2,500 journalists have convened here, with each leader's every movement tracked carefully. North Korea, however, has regularly received assistance from other nations, including Russia, Iran, and even South Korea and the United States.

Kim, meanwhile, was spotted taking a moonlit stroll around the high-end Marina Bay Sands hotel and casino, which is owned by GOP mega-donor Sheldon Adelson. Beyond the impact on both leaders' political fortunes, the summit could shape the fate of countless people - the citizens of impoverished North Korea, the tens of millions living in the shadow of the North's nuclear threat, and millions more worldwide.

"It's a huge win for Kim Jong Un, who now - if nothing else - has the prestige and propaganda coup of meeting one on one with the president, while armed with a nuclear deterrent", said Michael Kovrig, a northeast Asia specialist at the International Crisis Group in Washington.
