Algeria turns OFF the internet

Algeria's suspension of internet access is meant to prevent student cheating on exams

However it seems that in a bid to cut down on cheating, Algeria has made a decision to turn off the internet.

The internet will go dark for an hour after the beginning of national high school graduation exams, this includes ones on cell phone and wired internet connections.

The exam results are expected to be announced from July 22.

Facebook is to be blocked throughout the exams period, according to Algeria's Education Minister Nouria Benghabrit.

For the next few days, the whole country of Algeria will be going offline for several hours every day to prevent cheating during school exams.

Watch Terrell Owens run a 4.43 40-Yard Dash
Owens looks like he hasn't missed a step since he retired eight years ago, either, running the 40-yard-dash in just 4.43 seconds. At his age, and after such a long time out of the game, the notion of a football comeback might seem farfetched for Owens.

The drastic move comes after questions were leaked online before and during exams in 2016.

The internet for mobile and fixed line will be turned off nationwide during the exams.

Schools proctoring the exams have also been equipped with metal detectors to make sure that no one, including staff, brings any internet-enabled devices into the exam halls. Similarly, Iraq shut down internet in the country for three consecutive days in May 2016 between 5AM and 8AM local time to prevent sixth graders from cheating in the exams.

Even though previous year the authorities asked internet network providers to prevent any social media access, the voluntary procedure was not enough. Officials also set-up surveillance cameras and cell phone jammers at the centers, the BBC reported. The Lebanese non-governmental organisation is now soliciting stories from individuals negatively affected by an exam internet shutdown.
