Troubled Mothercare silent over future of five Northern Ireland stores

Mothercare has five branches in Northern Ireland

But the company, which has a branch at Great Northern Retail Park in Huddersfield, said it would not be disclosing which stores are facing closure at this time.

The UK business yesterday announced the return of the chief executive who was sacked just five weeks ago.

However, statutory pre-tax losses slumped to £72.8m from a profit of £7.1m in 2017 due to costs associated with restructuring and closures, as well as store asset impairments and onerous leases.

Sadly that means jobs will also be lost here in West Norfolk as well.

Mothercare's shares had lost 83pc of their value over the past year but rose as much as 34pc yesterday after it detailed a £113.5m (€130m) refinancing, including a planned £28m equity fundraising, and said Mark Newton-Jones would return as CEO. The man that had been brought in to replace him, David Wood, will now become managing director.

Managing director Jonathan Ward said the United Kingdom developments will have no impact here.

Mothercare has remained tight-lipped over the possible closure of its stores in Northern Ireland.

National retailer Mothercare has confirmed plans to close around 50 shops within a year and it's not looking good for the Rotherham store at Parkgate.

In 2013, the Early Learning Centre and Mothercare outlet store opened within the existing Mothercare (and former Children's World) unit at Parkgate Shopping in Rotherham.

The retailer has almost halved its United Kingdom store numbers over the past five years and although it had meant to have 92 stores by 2023, the latest closures will shrink that figure to 73.

There is also a store in Weybridge - but that one isn't on the list.

Mr Newton-Jones owns around 733,576 shares in Mothercare worth £197,918.

"The business was in an unsustainable situation and was in clear need of an appropriate resolution and today's comprehensive measures provide a renewed and stable financial structure for the business, and will allow Mothercare to accelerate its adaptation to the shifting dynamic towards online". The UK business has not turned a profit since 2012.
