Reasons Why Season 2

13 Reasons Why

13 Reasons Why was a sensation previous year, capturing viewers' attention with the story - based off the YA novel by Jay Asher - of teenage Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford), whose suicide reverberates through her high school community when the audio tapes she recorded before her death implicate 13 other people: classmates, teachers, friends, enemies, and in particular Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette).

Netflix is coming back with the second season of 13 Reasons Why after stirring a row with the first season for its depiction of suicide, bullying, drug use and sexual assault. In particular, the graphic, on-screen suicide of Hannah seemingly ignored most recommended media guidelines for portraying suicide, and was viewed as triggering and unnecessary by many professionals and mental health advocates.

"Adults supporting vulnerable young people should be aware of messages that present suicide as a form of revenge, romanticise suicide and suggest those who die by suicide can return from the dead to intervene in the lives of those they left behind".

The network has also launched a website, 13reasonswhy.info, which links directly to contacts for the Crisis Text Line and National Suicide Prevention Lifeline on the front page.

You may wish to ask your child/teen if they have heard of or seen this series.

"New Zealand has the second highest rate of school bullying in the OECD and the highest rate of youth suicide".

OFLC chief censor David Shanks said parents and guardians should watch the series with their children, or at the same time. The show deals with strong themes including teen suicide, substance abuse, bullying and sexual assault.

Halo: Fireteam Raven is the new arcade game you never wanted
Players will work together to defeat enemies through an on-rails experience, across locations from the first game. Raw Thrills and Play Mechanix are co-developing the game with them.

The Foundation also acknowledges most viewers are not vulnerable and will not need extra support after watching the show.

Mental health campaigner Mike King said the show carried important messages. "I'm very concerned that this could seriously put young people's lives at risk".

Each episode will air with a custom intro as well where cast members come "out of character" to introduce the show but advise it might not be right for all viewers, and they will also include a new after show concept to explore the issues raised.

"Those who are in a good place realise the impacts that judgmental attitudes might have on those who are more vulnerable".

New Zealand's Mental Health Foundation joined experts around the world accusing the show for being potentially harmful.

If you are anxious about your or someone else's mental health, the best place to get help is your GP or local mental health provider.
