Google Chrome to Phase Out 'Secure' Badge for HTTPS Sites Starting September

Google Chrome will remove the ‘Secure' button and replace it with...nothing

HTTPS is considered more secure as compared to HTTP because of data encryption by Transport Layer Security (TLS).

Google announced it is making changes to how Chrome, their web browser, labels HTTPS and HTTP sites in the future. Users will receive a red warning on HTTP pages whenever they are offering private info.

Chrome Security Product Manager, Emily Schechter, writes, "Since we'll soon start marking all HTTP pages as "not secure", we'll step towards removing Chrome's positive security indicators so that the default unmarked state is secure".

Instead, Chrome will focus on highlighting situations when the user is accessing an insecure HTTP website.

"When you load a website over HTTP, someone else on the network can look at or modify the site before it gets to you". The Chrome team encourages all website owners to make the transition to the HTTPS protocol.

You know how Google adds the green "Secure" message in your address bar, whenever you visit a site in HTTPS?

The search giant has for some time been encouraging developers to switch their sites to the more secure HTTPS protocol. As users will most likely turn to sites that are HTTPS protected, web developers will also most likely upgrade their sites to counter the loss of web traffic.

Users navigating the web through Chrome 68 will find all HTTP sites are classified as not being secure.

Now over 68% of Chrome traffic on Android and Windows is protected while over 78% is encrypted on Chrome OS and Mac. Instead of a subtle grey notification in the address bar, non-HTTPS sites will be flagged up with a bright red warning triangle - the same one it now uses if there's a problem with a site's security certificate. Starting in September 2018, Google will be removing the "Secure" wording and HTTPS scheme in Chrome version 69. "HTTPS is cheaper and easier than ever before, and unlocks powerful capabilities - so don't wait to migrate to HTTPS!" Google is reportedly working on other security changes in the meantime.
